The assistant helped Tyler back into his wheelchair, careful and gentle. Blood slid down his cheek from the cut on his forehead, but somehow, that only made the twisted smile tugging at his lips even more unsettling.
Jared stood nearby, his brows drawn together, his whole face carved in stone. His voice was sharp, every word heavy with disappointment. “Tyler, this time, you really went too far.”
“You know how much Emmy means to James. She’s the one person he cares about most.”
Tyler wiped the blood away with his thumb, not even flinching. He let out a low laugh. “Father, business is just another kind of battlefield.”
“If I hadn’t teamed up with Mr. Sparrow, do you think he would have let us off easy? You know how many people in the Nelson family are after this? It’s not like we’re the only ones circling.”
He paused, meeting his father’s stare without a hint of fear. “Honestly, you shouldn’t be wasting time on me right now.”
“With everything happening, what matters is bringing the kids back to the Nelson estate.”
Jared stared at him for a long moment, eyes dark and impossible to read. In the end, he just let out a long, heavy sigh, turned, and walked out, his steps echoing down the hall.
Out in the hospital corridor, James pushed out of the lounge and almost crashed into Teresa.
“James!” She grabbed his arm, her face streaked with tears, panic written all over her. “Did you find Emmy?”
James froze, his whole body tense. He looked down, unable to meet Teresa’s pleading gaze. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and when he finally spoke, his voice was rough and broken. “Mom... please don’t worry.”
“I’ll find her.”
“For now, just take care of the babies, okay?”
He didn’t have to say anything more. Teresa’s grip went slack, and the hope in her eyes faded. She understood. Her daughter was still missing. All she could do was put her faith in the man in front of her.
Her eyes were red from crying. “Do you... do you want to see the babies first?”
She had barely reached the door when she heard footsteps behind her, steady and sure. Her heart skipped a beat. She turned and saw Jared coming down the hall, flanked by several women in caregiver uniforms.
Teresa’s instincts kicked in. She hurried inside and called out to Lorraine, urgency in her voice. “Lorraine, hurry! Grab the babies, we’re leaving for Moonlight Bay!”
Lorraine was still processing when Jared came in with his people. He gave a cold order to the caregivers. “Take the babies. We’re going back to the family estate.”
Teresa’s heart pounded. She didn’t know where her courage came from, but as the caregivers stepped forward, she rushed to the bassinet and scooped up one of the babies, holding the little bundle close.
“I’ll take the children home myself!”
Lorraine caught on right away and grabbed the other baby.
Jared’s face turned stormy, his voice commanding. “Teresa, put the babies down.”
