Under Steve's meticulous care, Sylvia spent five days recovering in the hospital. Although her life had been saved, the physical somatization brought on by her severe depression was exceptionally agonizing. Sylvia's legs were terribly stiff, utterly devoid of strength, to the point where Steve had to carry her just to use the bathroom. For most of the day, she was confined to a wheelchair. When Emmy, Abriella, and her other close friends took turns visiting, their eyes invariably grew red with unshed tears at the sight of her pale, emaciated figure in the chair. None of them could believe that the fiercely decisive Ms. Moore of the corporate world had been tortured by depression into such a frail, withered state. To ease her physical stiffness, Steve applied hot compresses and massaged her legs every single day, his movements growing as skilled as those of a professional physical therapist.
On the morning of her discharge, Krystina walked into the room carrying a massive bouquet of flowers, her face radiating undisguised triumph.
"Sylvia, justice is served. I bring incredible news." Krystina shoved the flowers into Steve's arms and plopped down on the edge of the bed, grabbing Sylvia's hand as she began to spill the details. "All hell broke loose in Seaview last night. That bastard Harrison is completely ruined for the rest of his life."
Sylvia's eyelashes fluttered as she looked up at her friend.
Krystina sneered, her tone brimming with immense satisfaction. "That piece of trash got drunk at a club and actually had a death wish, trying to steal a woman from a mob boss. Do you think a guy like that would just let it slide? His men dragged Harrison right into an alley and shattered both of his kneecaps." She laughed. "I heard from my friends in Seaview that the bone fragments are so thoroughly pulverized they cannot even be pieced back together. He is going to spend the rest of his life as a useless cripple in a wheelchair."
Steve raised an eyebrow, his expression completely blank. "That is what happens when karma finally catches up with the wicked."
Krystina nodded furiously. "Exactly. Right now, the entire Moore family is in utter chaos, running around frantically begging for doctors and medicine. It is a pathetic sight. And because of this massive scandal, Moore Enterprises' stock plummeted the second the market opened today. Its valuation has crashed right through the floor. They are on the verge of bankruptcy and liquidation."
Listening quietly to all of this, Sylvia was entirely surprised to find that her heart did not harbor a single ripple of emotion. There was no sympathy, nor was there the thrilling rush of vengeance. There was only the profound, weightless relief of ultimate liberation.
