Mr. Sullivan didn’t even glance at her. He kept pacing around the living room, anxiety written all over his face, clinging to the idea that marrying Abriella into some elite family was the only way to save the company.
He wasted no time pulling strings, trying to mess with Abriella’s marital status and force her address back onto their family record.
But then a document with a bright red official stamp landed on his desk, and it was a real wake-up call. The warning was brutally clear, accusing him of interfering in the marriage of a serviceman and meddling in the family of someone still on active duty. It promised that if he tried it again, he’d be taken to court.
Mr. Sullivan just stared at the paper, totally floored. A firefighter… since when did that make someone military? Will’s background was turning out to be way more complicated and powerful than he ever expected.
Panic started rising in his chest. The Sullivan family business was hanging by a thread.
…
A few days later, Emmy’s phone rang. It was Abriella, her voice bright and full of energy.
“Emmy, you’re seriously a genius!”
“Mandy pissed off Isabel, so the Summer family went after the Sullivans. They lost a ton of their assets.”
“She was always so smug because of her connection to Isabel, but now she’s a total mess.”
“And those two from the Sullivans keep trying to visit me, but I turn them away every time.”
“I can’t even begin to tell you how satisfying this all feels.”
Emmy couldn’t help but smile at her friend’s triumphant tone.
“Looks like everything’s working out just fine.”
She paused, then shifted topics.
“If you want to turn things around for your company, I bet Isabel will make a move to get on your good side. You could use that to your advantage.”
“But be careful. Isabel’s not easy to read.”
Abriella let out a little laugh.
“You even guessed Isabel would come crawling to me. You really are something.”
“She showed up a couple days ago, but I’m not falling for her act.”
“She made up some excuse about coming to the hospital for a check-up and just ‘happening’ to see me. Please. Like I care.”
Abriella’s voice was loaded with disdain.
