Meanwhile, Abriella’s social media was wide open for everyone to see.
Steve absentmindedly scrolled through his phone, but when he saw her latest post, he froze. His eyes widened, his face turned pale, and all he could feel was shock and disbelief.
Nobody knew better than Steve that James’s crew wasn’t made up of ordinary people.
His hands shook as he called Abriella, barely able to tap her name. The phone rang forever. He was just about to hang up when she finally picked up.
“Hey?” Abriella sounded cheerful, like nothing was out of the ordinary.
Steve gripped his phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. His voice was rough. “Did you... did you really get married to him?”
She laughed lightly. “Yeah. Just signed the papers. They’re still warm.”
It felt like a boulder had landed on his chest. He could barely breathe.
He struggled to get the words out. “Do you even understand what it means to marry him? He’s military…”
“Of course I know. That’s exactly why I rushed to do it.”
She paused, and there was a hint of sarcasm in her voice now.
“You know my parents are always trying to marry me off for the family’s gain.”
“If I marry a soldier, there’s nothing they can do to me, no matter how powerful they think they are.”
Steve felt his heart sink deeper and deeper.
“So what you’re saying is... you didn’t marry him because you love him? You just wanted out of the Sullivan family?”
“I could’ve... Why didn’t you let me...”
She didn’t let him finish. “You could’ve what? The one who came to get me out of the Sullivan mess was him, not you.”
That shut him up completely.
Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.
After a long pause, he finally whispered, his voice hoarse, “I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Abriella said, sounding almost gentle. “This isn’t your fault. I’m the one who insisted on going against them. I wanted to see if they’d really go so far just for their own interests.”
“But...” Her tone softened. “As a friend, I hope you’ll wish me and Will happiness.”
“And stop bringing me lunch, okay? My husband might get jealous.”
