Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 637

The fire station had been nonstop these past few days.

James came home later every night. By now, it was almost ten and the apartment was still quiet.

Emmy was propped up in bed, a textbook open in her hands, but her eyes kept sliding shut. She was determined to stay awake, just long enough to see him walk through the door, to wish him goodnight in person.

Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her sleepy haze. The number was unfamiliar. Emmy hesitated for a second, then answered.

A woman’s anxious voice came through the line.

“Hello, is this Ms. Eincoln?”

“This is she.”

“Ms. Eincoln, I’m the one taking care of the old madam,” the woman said, her voice trembling. “Do you think you could come see her tomorrow? She…”

Emmy’s heart dropped, any trace of sleepiness gone. She sat up, every muscle tense.

“What happened to my grandma?”

“Her condition has gotten worse,” the caregiver said quietly. “She doesn’t recognize anyone anymore, but she keeps asking about you… She’s been repeating, ‘When will my granddaughter-in-law come visit?’ I didn’t know what else to do, so I found the number you left and called. I’m sorry to bother you…”

A sharp ache filled Emmy’s chest. She didn’t even have to think about it.

“I’ll be there first thing in the morning.”

She steadied herself and asked, “Is she still at the monastery?”

“No, she moved back to the nursing home. It’s easier for her treatment here.”

At the nursing home, the caregiver ended the call and turned toward the man behind her. She kept her voice low and respectful. “Mr. Nelson, Ms. Eincoln said she’ll come tomorrow.”

James nodded and walked over to the old woman’s bed.
