About a minute later, Nina spun around abruptly. Her small face was incredibly serious as she lowered her voice to a whisper. "Emmy! Something terrible is happening! I can hear that celebrity crying, and it sounds miserable. She keeps calling Mr. Nelson 'Nico,' and begging him not to do this to her..." Nina swallowed hard, her imagination running wild with all sorts of inappropriate, scandalous scenarios. She marched quickly over to the bed, entirely indignant. "Emmy, do you think he is assaulting her? That celebrity keeps screaming. The sound is muffled, but I can hear her perfectly. She is crying for help and saying it hurts! Should we go help? Should we go rescue her?"
Emmy closed her eyes in exhaustion. "No. Come back. Stop eavesdropping."
Nina's momentum was yanked to a halt, the tips of her shoes scuffing the floor. The little girl turned around in a huff, planting her hands on her hips with her brow furrowed into a tight knot. "But Emmy! That woman is screaming for help! What if he really got seduced by that home-wrecker and is doing something to betray you? We would be catching them in the act. We would be doing the right thing!"
Emmy's pale lips moved slightly. "He would not do that. He is just looking for the truth."
Nina blinked her large eyes in sheer confusion. She clearly did not understand what "looking for the truth" meant, but since Emmy had given an order, she did not dare disobey. "Oh... alright then."
Nina slowly and reluctantly shuffled back to the base of the wall. She kept her sharp ears perked, holding her breath to continue listening to the commotion next door. The crying and screaming gradually died down, replaced by a man's freezing, bone-chilling interrogation. Even though she could not make out the specific words, the tone was absolutely not flirtatious. It was the icy menace used when interrogating a criminal. Nina quietly sighed in relief and patted her chest. "Thank goodness. It really does not sound like they are doing anything bad. His voice is too scary. He sounds colder than the Grim Reaper. That celebrity is probably scared out of her wits." As long as Emmy was not being cheated on, the alarm was lifted.
Nina quickly put the spoon back in the bowl and supported Emmy's shoulder with one hand. With just that gentle touch, Emmy felt a steady, robust strength holding her up. This little girl looked skinny and small, but her grip strength was indeed extraordinary. Nina arranged two soft pillows behind Emmy's back so she could lean comfortably before handing the bowl of soup back to her.
Emmy lowered her head, taking small sips of the warm soup. As the warm liquid slid down her esophagus and into her stomach, she finally felt like she was coming back to life.
Sitting on the stool beside the bed, Nina could not keep her mouth shut. She recounted everything that had happened while Emmy was unconscious. Emmy listened quietly, nodding occasionally in response. She realized that having this little chatterbox around actually had an unexpected benefit. She did not need to waste any energy asking questions; the girl would vividly narrate every single detail of what was happening around them. It was more detailed than if Emmy had seen it with her own eyes. And through all these trivial descriptions, she could clearly feel James's anxiety. Even while she was asleep, he had guarded her like a mountain, not closing his eyes for a single second all night. Emmy let out a long sigh.
