Before they knew it, half an hour had passed. The door to the hospital room was pushed open. Emmy reflexively looked up and saw James walk in. In his hand, he carried a small, silver metal case.
Seeing Emmy sitting up against the headboard with a much rosier complexion, the tense, hard lines of his face visibly softened. He walked with large strides to the edge of the bed, his voice laced with tension. "You are awake. Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere? Are you still dizzy?" He raised a hand to feel her forehead, his palm transferring a reassuring warmth.
Emmy tilted her head up slightly to meet his gaze, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I feel much better. Do not worry." Her eyes moved downward, landing on the metal case he had casually set on the nightstand.
James noticed her gaze but did not explain immediately. He turned his head, casting a flat look at Nina, who was sitting to the side peeling another orange. "Get out."
Nina was happily eating, and being called out so suddenly nearly made her choke. She quickly grabbed three or four more oranges from the fruit basket, shoved them into her pockets, and scrambled out of the room, shutting the door behind her.
The room fell quiet again, leaving only the two of them. Emmy looked at James and asked softly, "Did you get the truth?"
James remained silent for a moment before nodding. "I did."
Emmy breathed a sigh of relief. That was the truest memory hidden in Mercedes's subconscious. It was the key to unlocking the entire mystery. She pursed her lips. "Can I see it?"
James frowned slightly, hesitation flashing in his eyes. He looked at Emmy's still slightly pale face, noting the urgency now written all over her expression. He was worried. Her high fever had just broken, and her body was still incredibly weak. He feared she would not be able to handle the shock of watching it. He sat down on the edge of the bed and enveloped her slightly cool hand in his large palm, gently rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand. "Wait until you recover a bit more to watch it, alright? Right now, you just need to rest."
