Back in the master bedroom, Emmy washed up in the bathroom, changed into comfortable cotton pajamas, and climbed into bed. It didn't take long for James to emerge from his own shower. Curiously, instead of getting straight into bed, he deliberately detoured to check the bathroom trash can before returning to the bedroom.
He looked at Emmy, his tone laced with eager anticipation. "Has your time of the month arrived yet?"
Emmy, who was leaning against the headboard replying to messages on her phone, frowned slightly at his question. "Based on the calendar, it should be today. But maybe being in a coma for a few days messed with my hormones, so it is a little delayed."
The moment the words left her mouth, the corners of James's lips curled into a broad, predatory smile. He strode over to the nightstand and tossed a handful of small square packets onto the mattress. "Perfect. Let us make the most of our time."
Emmy glanced at the packets, her eyes widening in alarm, but before she could formulate a protest, James seemed to remember something else. "Wait for me," he ordered softly, turning on his heel and vanishing into the walk-in closet.
When he reappeared, a vibrant red silk slip dress dangled from his fingers. With its spaghetti straps and plunging V-neck, it was as fiery as a flame and breathtakingly gorgeous. It was the exact same dress Emmy had worn at the resort hotel. The very dress that had triggered the most socially humiliating moment of her entire life.
James approached the bed with the dress, looking entirely like a cunning wolf trying to coax a child with candy. "Emmy, wear this. I didn't get a proper look at it last time..."
Emmy's eyelid twitched violently at the sight of the scarlet fabric. "No way!" she shrieked, instantly yanking the duvet entirely over her head. Her muffled, defiant voice echoed from beneath the covers. "I would rather die than wear that! You are completely deranged, James! Do you really have to torture me with this right now?"
James peeled the blanket down just enough to expose her face, continuing his gentle persuasion. "Are you absolutely sure? Just this once?"
"Get lost! Absolutely not!" Emmy shook her head like a rattle, her cheeks burning a violent shade of red, her resolve unbreakable.
She shifted restlessly in his arms, a mischievous spark lighting up her thoughts. Reaching out, she slipped her fingertips beneath the hem of his pajama shirt and lightly traced a trail along his rock-hard abs.
Emmy propped herself up on one elbow, peering down at his face in the dim light, utter confusion masking her features. "Why? What is wrong with you?" Was he actually exhausted from the night before? Impossible. Did a man like him even know the meaning of exhaustion?
Seeing her look at him as if questioning his manhood, James let out a breathless, exasperated laugh. He sighed helplessly, deciding against keeping it a secret. Leaning close to her ear, he dropped an absolute bombshell in a low whisper. "I got a minimally invasive vasectomy this afternoon."
Emmy froze. "What?"
