At the exact same time, in the ancient, stately master bedroom of the Aldridge estate in the Capital, a scream of disbelief shattered the quiet night.
"You did what?!" Teresa bolted upright in bed, her silk robe slipping off one shoulder, her face painted with pure shock.
Beside her, Andrew sat up as well. Reaching out, he gently pulled a highly agitated Teresa back into the warmth of his embrace. "Teresa, please calm down. Having this procedure means we will never have to worry about taking precautions again."
Teresa struggled slightly against his hold, her eyes red and glaring. "Just for that? Just to make it convenient for your endless urges?" Her voice trembled with a volatile mix of anger and agonizing heartache. "Andrew, how could you be so cruel to yourself? That is surgery! It is irreversible! Do you have any idea what this means for a man?"
Andrew tightened his arms around her, resting his chin softly against her forehead, his eyes overflowing with deep affection. "I know. But I refuse to let you bear the risks of an accidental pregnancy. You take excellent care of yourself and you are in perfect health, but the dangers of an advanced maternal age are too severe. I can't gamble with your life, and I won't."
Teresa froze, tears pooling rapidly in her eyes.
Andrew raised a hand, his thumb tenderly brushing against her cheek as his voice dropped into a raspy, emotional whisper. "Besides... I hate having that layer of rubber between us when we are intimate. I want to merge with you completely, without a single barrier. I want us to be entirely one."
His words were so raw and fiercely passionate that they sent a scalding tremor straight to Teresa's core. Her anger evaporated instantly, replaced by a swelling tide of bittersweet emotion. "But..." she choked out, her fingers digging desperately into his large hand. "Even if I did get pregnant, I would gladly have a child for you."
She meant every word. Though she was forty-six, she hadn't reached menopause yet. If she truly conceived his flesh and blood, she would risk her life to bring their baby into the world. Yet she never imagined that this man, without breathing a single word of discussion, would undergo a vasectomy purely to protect her. Now, they could never have a child that belonged to just the two of them.
Sensing the profound sorrow in her heart, Andrew bowed his head, kissing away the tears tracking down her face, and let out a soft sigh. "Teresa, you have to realize that we have already lost so many years together. Our time left to love each other is so much shorter than young couples starting out." He cupped her face, his gaze burning with a love too thick to untangle. "My heart is very small. I have already given every ounce of love in my lifetime to you. I have absolutely nothing left to give to anyone else, even if that person were our own child. So, let us just focus on loving each other perfectly. Alright?"
But Emmy was relentless, shooting her other hand out. "Just let me look! I need to see exactly how big of an incision the doctor made!"
The tips of James's ears turned a highly suspicious shade of crimson as he clung desperately to his waistband. "It is tiny. It was minimally invasive, barely even visible to the naked eye."
Refusing to believe him, Emmy pulled harder. "I don't believe you! I have to see it for myself to know you are okay."
James pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on. Was he really afraid of her looking? No, he was terrified that if she looked, she would touch it, and he would be the one forced to suffer the agonizing consequences of being turned on. "It is really nothing. Leave it alone."
Seeing him deflect so stubbornly, Emmy's competitive streak flared. She climbed up onto her knees, planting her hands firmly on her hips like an absolute menace. "James, are you a man or not? I am not even embarrassed, so why are you acting so shy? Is there a single inch of you I haven't seen? I have even..."
