Chapter 48
When the waiting staff brought Calista to the private room, everyone inside was more or less hostile toward her.
“Where is he?” She stood at the door and swept her gaze around the room, not seeing Lucien anywhere.
“Why the lofty act? From what I’ve heard, you’re working at Riverview Medical Center, and you specifically asked for the job to serve patients in the VIP ward. Is that true?
“Calista, are you trying to find your next backer?” Jason was pissed off, and his words were nasty as well. He sauntered over to Calista, shut the door, and rested his hand on her shoulder.
She looked at his hand disdainfully, her eyebrows knitting tightly.
“If Lucien isn’t here, I’m leaving.” Then, she shook his hand off. She was in no mood to waste her time on rich heirs. All she wanted was some quiet time.
“Geez. Where’s the fire? We’re relatives, if you think about it. Since you need money that badly, I can point you in the right direction How about you work as a drink promoter at this club of mine? Maybe you’ll find your next rich husband here, too.”
Jason was so used to being arrogant and overbearing that he had no sense of what should and shouldn’t be said. His friends were cut from the same cloth as well.
They’d lost the jovial mood they started with. Now that Calista was here for them to get their digs in, they hastily went over and surrounded her.
“Hey, Jason. That’s not the right way to put it. Ms. Marchand was once Lucien’s wife. Of course, she doesn’t care for a small–time family. If you ask me, a drink promoter role sounds awesome.
“Ms. Marchand, if you’ll do the honors.” Jason’s rowdy friends were no better than him. He grabbed a bottle of wine and shoved it into Calista’s hands.
She didn’t want to take it, but she was surrounded on all sides, and they weren’t giving her the chance to refuse.
