“Calista, I’m giving you one more chance. Don’t piss me off!” Lucien’s expression darkened. 

“What do you expect? A thank you?” 

Was she supposed to thank him for leaving her to her fate in cold blood and doing nothing to help her as she was publicly shamed? 

His voice came over the phone again. “Are you sure you want to talk to me in this tone?” 

Lucien’s voice was stiff, cold, and detached. Clearly, he thought himself better than her. 

“What tone should I have used, then? Lucien, I’m tired of fighting with you. I did everything you asked me to do. What more do you want from me?” Calista was utterly disheartened, and her words grew all the sharper. 

“Calista Marchand!” He could no longer understand her temper. All he knew was that she had gotten increasingly bolder. She never used to behave this way in front of him. 

“Pick me up at Paradise Club. Galen will wait for you by the door.” 

“I’m busy. Besides, I’m just gonna embarrass you if I go there. Find someone else! 

“If you need someone to give you a ride home, a lot of people are waiting in line to drive you. If you don’t plan to go home, I’m sure you already have somewhere else in mind.” 

“Are you sure you won’t pick me up?” Lucien asked, his voice so low and rough that it made Calista’s heart clench. He must’ve been tipsy to be saying such things, reminding her that Anthony still needed his help.
