He was planning to go abroad after helping Ruby this one time, possibly never returning to Country Veytura. He had even repeatedly ordered—threatened, even—his superiors not to let her accompany him as his assistant.
It was all that vixen Ruby's fault! A cast-off, thrown away by a vulgar man like Cassian Veyne. Why was Victor so devoted to her?
Romaine's heart was filled with resentment and bitterness, and she blamed Ruby for all of Victor's coldness toward her.
"He must be with her!"
she said through gritted teeth, her voice firm with conviction.
...
Meanwhile.
Sylas and Asher stood face to face.
One stood timidly, while the other glanced askance at him.
To be safe, Ruby had arranged for Asher to go with Sylas, while the Domingo couple went with Garrison and Townsend.
The thought of babysitting a kid gave Sylas a headache. He rubbed his temples. "You'll stay with me at the hotel. No running off on your own."
Asher nodded, meek and obedient.
Sylas listed a few more trivial rules, and Asher just kept nodding silently.
Sylas immediately lost interest.
This kid was nowhere near as cute as Mira. Even though Mira was just a baby, she was like a clever little fox—beautiful, delicate, and when he played with her, she'd blink her big eyes and giggle.
"By the way, you've been staying at Southgarde Estate for a while now, haven't you?" he said, stroking his chin. He thought to himself, even I haven't stayed there that long.
He was a little jealous.
Sylas looked Asher up and down, giving himself a silent pep talk.
"So you must know a bit about her, right?" A thought suddenly struck Sylas, and he leaned in close, the boredom in his eyes replaced by a sudden spark of energy.
Startled by the face suddenly so close to his, Asher froze for a moment before quickly and honestly answering, "Miss Ruby likes the color blue and lilies. She doesn't like onions, ginger, or garlic. She also doesn't like..."
His eyes drifted upward as he tried to remember. Sylas sat up straight, muttering to himself, "Likes blue, got it. Lilies? I'll buy her some next time. Onions, ginger, garlic... hmm... I don't like adding those anyway."
He eagerly memorized the information Asher provided, thinking that maybe this kid wasn't so useless after all.
The two of them spent the better part of the day talking—or rather, one of them was giving a lesson, and the other was taking notes.
...
Back at Southgarde Estate.
After Ruby sent Sylas and Asher on their way, Victor and the Domingo couple came down from where they had been hiding upstairs.
The couple had only just been reunited with the son they had missed so dearly. As he left, their eyes remained glued to the door, watching the two figures who kept looking back.
"Alright," Ruby said, clearing her throat to get their attention.
