It truly was getting incredibly late. Ruby nodded, asking Pamela to show them to the guest rooms while she headed straight for her own bedroom.
Sylas's gaze was fixed entirely on her back. His expression twisted into obvious disappointment.
It seemed his presence hadn't caused so much as a ripple in her world.
He lowered his eyes, unable to stop himself from following her down the hall.
After a few steps, Ruby sensed him trailing behind her.
She had reached the long corridor leading to her bedroom, far enough from the living room that the sound of his approaching footsteps echoed clearly in the silence.
She stopped dead in her tracks, startling him.
When he nearly crashed into her, Sylas froze, staring down into her cold, indifferent face.
"How long are you going to follow me?"
Ruby crossed her arms, leaning casually against the wall.
Compared to her relaxed posture, Sylas—who usually carried himself with effortless arrogance—looked completely stiff and awkward.
He balled his hand into a fist, pressing it against his mouth as he cleared his throat. "Um... we haven't talked in a while."
Ruby frowned slightly, her eyes sweeping over him. She instantly noticed how heavily his energy had shifted since the day they first met.
He seemed to have changed completely after she entered his life.
A strange heaviness settled in her chest, making her already stoic expression turn icy.
She pressed her lips into a thin line. Looking at his face—which was full of painful, raw expectation—she swallowed back the harsh words she had been preparing.
"I'm busy, and I need to sleep. I won't hold it against you for breaking in tonight, but you need to go home."
Her tone was brutally flat, laced with undeniable distance.
Sylas reached out, his hand freezing mid-air. Disbelief shattered across his features.
"Ruby, what's wrong with you?"
A rare, vulnerable anxiety spilled over his face. He felt as if something he finally held securely in his grasp was suddenly slipping through his fingers like sand.
Ruby met his gaze, her face completely blank. "It's late. Go back to sleep."
She turned to leave, but before she could take a step, he grabbed her wrist.
Sylas stared at her, desperate. "If you don't give me a real answer right now, I swear I will sit outside your door all night."
How could her attitude completely flip in just a few days?
His chest tightened with absolute panic. The calmer she acted, the more his mind spiraled.
Ruby stared down at the massive hand clamped around her wrist. Her brow furrowed, then slowly smoothed out.
"What exactly do you want from me?"
She let out an exhausted sigh. She was about to yank her arm away, but the moment she looked into his eyes, she froze.
