Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 303

Cassian closed the hospital room door and turned around, meeting Mira’s gaze once more.

Or rather, Mira had been staring at him the whole time, her big eyes never leaving his face.

A strange, indescribable feeling welled up in Cassian’s chest. He pulled out a chair and sat down beside her.

He started to speak, afraid he’d sound too harsh, so he softened his tone on purpose. “How did you get these bruises?”

The sight of a man in a tailored suit seriously questioning a toddler was almost comical, but Cassian’s expression was earnest.

He’d heard Mira clearly call Ruby “Mommy” before—maybe she could say more.

“Mean! Mean!” Mira’s little hands slapped the blanket, her face scrunched in anger.

Cassian frowned. “Mean?”

“Aunt mean! Sister mean!” Mira stammered, repeating herself.

Cassian mentally filed away the words “Aunt” and “Sister.” He didn’t know who this “Aunt” was, but “Sister”? Since when did Mira have a sister?

He searched his memory but came up empty. Sighing, he gently tucked the blanket around her. “Be good, Mira. Daddy’s going to find Mommy.”

The word “Daddy” felt awkward on his tongue, but the moment he said it, a strange, unfamiliar sense of satisfaction blossomed in his chest.

Looking a little self-conscious, Cassian rubbed the tip of his nose and stood up. His trench coat settled back onto his shoulders, and in an instant, he was once again the formidable Mr. Veyne.

Only this time, as his gaze lingered on Mira, there was a new determination in his eyes.

Ruby was his wife. No matter who Mira’s biological father was, that made Mira his daughter too.

With that thought, Cassian lifted his chin slightly. The commanding presence he exuded seemed to intensify.

The team of bodyguards and specialists around him sprang into action, their movements suddenly brisk and purposeful.

In the hospital corridors, security staff hurried back and forth. A tense, stormy atmosphere settled over the entire building, as if something ominous was about to break.

Cassian rubbed his forehead in frustration, only to be summoned by a nurse who insisted he return—the child was crying so much she couldn’t eat.

Strangely, the moment he saw Mira, the heaviness in his chest seemed to lift, as if swept away by some invisible breeze.

Following the pediatrician’s instructions, he carefully lifted Mira into his arms. His movements were a bit stiff, but gentle.

Mira immediately quieted, though her eyes were still brimming with tears.

“Mommy!” she whimpered.

Cassian leaned closer, finally catching her desperate cry.
