Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 302

“Room 302.”

Beeeeep—

The call cut off abruptly.

The nurse stared at her phone, momentarily stunned. But after all, this was the wealthiest man in Quinborough on the other end—she wouldn’t dare show any emotion, let alone slack off in caring for Mira.

With a helpless sigh, she turned back to the hospital room to keep watch over her young patient.

She had barely finished changing Mira’s IV and settled into her chair when the door burst open with a forceful bang.

Before she could react, a rush of cold air swept past her cheek, trailing in the wake of a crisp wool coat and sending wisps of her bangs fluttering.

Blinking in surprise, she looked up to see a tall, strikingly handsome man standing in the doorway, his expression icy. Without a word, he strode to the bedside and leaned over the little girl with wide, blinking eyes.

“What happened to her?”

Cassian’s brow furrowed as he glanced at Mira, then fixed his sharp gaze on the nurse.

Those deep, piercing eyes made her feel as if a jolt of electricity had shot through her limbs, but she quickly regained her professional composure.

She stepped forward and explained carefully, “Miss Mira has multiple bruises on her body from being grabbed and pinched. But the real reason she was admitted is that someone gave her a dangerous amount of salt, which led to dehydration and a fever. That’s why she had to be brought in for treatment.”

“Who brought her here?”

Cassian pressed the back of his hand gently to Mira’s forehead, checking her temperature. The tenderness of his touch seemed at odds with the steely coldness in his face.

“It was Mrs. Veyne, sir.”

His hand paused, then continued as if nothing had happened. He rolled up the sleeve of Mira’s hospital gown, revealing purplish bruises on her arm. His brow tightened, his eyes darkening with a dangerous glint.

Although Mira wasn’t his biological child, he’d watched her grow up these past years. There was something about her that made him feel fiercely protective—closer than he’d ever expected. If he harbored any resentment, it was toward Ruby, and more so toward the man who fathered this child and had never been found.

But when it came to Mira, all he felt was care and affection.

Who could have dared to lay a hand on her?

“Bennett!”

He barked toward the door, summoning his assistant. “Send someone to find Ruby. Now.”

As the order left his lips, Cassian pressed a hand to his chest, feeling his heartbeat pound, as if it might burst right through his ribs.

Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.

Bennett caught the sharp look in Cassian’s eyes and didn’t dare delay—he turned and hurried off to arrange the search.

The room’s atmosphere grew so cold and tense the nurse felt her own heart seize up with anxiety.

“You can go now.”

Cassian waved her away.

Relieved, the nurse nodded and slipped out, grateful for any excuse to escape—even the handsomest man in the city couldn’t make her linger in a room this icy and oppressive.
