Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 123

"Gennifer, this was your brilliant idea?"

He curled his fingers, voice laced with mockery.

Gennifer's lips trembled.

She had intended to hurt Ruby, but somehow, her plan had backfired—sending Ruby right back to Northridge Manor.

The realization made her grit her teeth in frustration.

But there was something even more pressing at the moment.

The golden retriever's sudden madness—that was her doing.

She hadn't expected, though, that the man always by Ruby's side would go so far as to send that half-dead dog to the hospital as well.

Veyne Private Medical Center belonged to the Veyne family, and that meant it was right under Cassian's nose.

Gennifer tried to steady herself, but fear still crept into her voice. "Mr. Blackwood, we're in this together, whether we like it or not."

"What do you want from me this time?"

Morgan glanced up, looking bored, waiting for her to continue.

"I deliberately put hallucinogens on Ruby to make the dog attack her. I'd already riled the dog up beforehand."

Gennifer swallowed hard. "I'm worried they'll figure out what really happened."

"Gennifer." Morgan tapped his fingers on the table, his sharp eyes flashing with impatience. "I've helped you enough, but you never learn."

"Compared to Ruby…"

He arched his brow and let out a cold laugh. "No wonder, after a whole year, she gave you every chance to break them up and you still haven't made any progress."

"And now that Ruby's back, Cassian's behaving nothing like before."

His words dripped with contempt, but there was a dark, bitter edge to them as well.

Gennifer's face shifted from pale to ashen.

She bit down on her lip until she tasted blood.

Normally, even knowing Morgan was her partner, she would've snapped back at such insults. But now, needing his help, she could only swallow her anger.

Closing her eyes, she forced herself to speak. "That's why I need your help."

"I need you to get the golden retriever out of there. If you can't, then… make sure it doesn't leave alive."

Her voice was low, cold, and filled with venom.

Back when Ruby was sent away and Gennifer inherited all of her duties, Cameron had been the first to oppose her—he'd even confronted her in front of everyone.

Had he started gathering evidence even then?

Had he actually found something?

The memory soured her mood; her face twisted with frustration and resentment.

"But how do you know?" she pressed, still not convinced.

Morgan's answer was cold, his gaze dark. "Cassian's been digging into what happened a year ago."

He looked at her pointedly. "Cassian isn't the type to act on a whim. If he's investigating now, it means he's found something."

Gennifer's heart leapt into her throat.

Her palms grew slick with sweat.

They'd covered their tracks well back then, but it wasn't foolproof. The only reason they'd gotten away with it was because Cassian's anger had smothered any real investigation.

But if he decided to look into it now?

A shiver ran through her.
