Burn Me Once, Burn With Me novel Chapter 122

The moment Cassian heard those words, the anger he'd barely managed to suppress surged back in full force.

He couldn't help but study her face, searching for any hint that she might be lying.

"Why would she do something like that?"

Gennifer was the lead counsel at Veyne & Co. Why would she stoop so low?

Cassian pressed his fingers to his brow, shoving the question aside for now.

"If it really was her, I'll make sure she apologizes to you."

"Just an apology?" Ruby let out a short, incredulous laugh.

"Don't worry. She'll pay a price. I'll make sure you get the justice you deserve."

Cassian realized he'd been far too lenient with Gennifer. His brows drew together, and his tone hardened.

"Fine, Mr. Veyne. I'll be waiting."

Ruby agreed, still believing in Cassian's sense of honor. He was a man who kept his word—just like before, when he'd had her sentenced without mercy.

"No matter what, it isn't safe for you right now. You'll be staying with me until things settle down."

"Alright," she answered without protest.

She admitted it—being by Cassian's side was the safest option she had.

Cassian wasted no time giving orders, as if afraid she'd change her mind if given a moment longer to think.

Bennett, standing nearby, finally let out a relieved breath. Having her return home was exactly what Mr. Veyne wanted.

"Gather Mrs. Veyne's things from the hotel and bring them back," Cassian instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. Bennett immediately called over two bodyguards to take care of it.

This time, Ruby didn't refuse.

Mira, perhaps sensing the shift, waved her chubby little hand with wide, excited eyes.

Though Cassian and Ruby had come to an agreement, the distance built up over time left the air heavy with unspoken words. The silence was palpable, making Mira's cheerful noises stand out all the more.

Cassian's gaze fell on Mira, lingering on her delicate features, so familiar yet new.

Ruby noticed his intent stare and instinctively pulled Mira closer, wrapping her arms protectively around her daughter.

In that movement, her freshly bandaged arm was exposed, the white gauze standing out starkly against her skin. The sight made Cassian's brows twitch with concern.

"Did you get a tetanus shot?"

"I wasn't bitten, just scratched," Ruby replied, her voice calm.

Still, Cassian's frown didn't ease. "When we get home, let the family doctor check it again."

"I assigned you to protect her. Her safety is your first priority."

He released the guard with a shove, sending the man stumbling back.

"If you can't handle even this, why should I keep you on?"

His voice was icy, brimming with fury.

All three bodyguards dropped to their knees, trembling. "Mr. Veyne!"

Bennett watched the scene unfold, wanting to step in but shrinking back under Cassian's glacial glare. He lowered his head, trying to stay invisible.

The entire hospital felt smothered by the chill in the air. Everyone nearby looked worried, afraid they'd be next.

"And one more thing—find out who saved Ruby."

Meanwhile—

Gennifer was stunned when she heard what had happened.

That woman was unharmed? The child too?

Morgan sat across from her, annoyance clear in his eyes.
