I looked at all the evidence laid out in front of me. Some were even dated back to when I first sat in the seat as Alpha, years ago, when I had an unrelenting desire to make the world a better place.
Well, I still had such a desire, but back then, I didn’t care who I stepped on. I didn’t care what rules I bent. All I cared about was protecting the weak.
I’d shut down gambling houses that bled families dry, kicked out squatters that sold stolen goods, and jailed drunkards who terrorized women in the alleys. I did it without hesitation, and I did it because no one else would. So yes–I’ve had a lot of enemies. And it looked like all of them were now staring back at me from these sheets of
paper.
Some of these reports were familiar. I had seen them before, dismissed and resolved long ago. Others, though, had been forged to make it look like I’d acted out of greed and not justice.
They tried to take me down back then, too, alleging I violated due process, that I invaded their establishments without permits. But those same establishments had been drug dens, smuggling operations, and illegal fighting rings. Did I care about paperwork when people’s lives were being destroyed?
No. Back then, an Alpha could act on instinct. If something was wrong, you fixed it. That was the law.
Now, though, some things have changed.
The Council had rewritten the rules–you needed permits for raids, written reports for arrests, and oversight from Elders for any disciplinary measures. I understood, of course. It was because some Alphas had abused the system and their power.
I sighed and rubbed the bridge of my nose. My head was pounding from reading too many lies at once.
“Elder Thane,” I muttered. “Some of these were already dismissed. Why are you bringing them up again?”
Thane sat across from me. He had a habit of rubbing his chin when thinking, and right now, his fingers were moving slowly.
“There are a few more,” he said finally. “You know we’re doing this to calm the people.”

“Calm the people?” I repeated, leaning back in my chair. “By reopening closed cases? You think stirring old wounds will calm anyone?”
He met my glare without flinching. “There’s unrest among the lower packs, Abel. Some of them believe the system’s unfair–that Alphas like you get away with everything because of your… position.”
My jaw tightened.
“There are whispers that the True Alphas have been abusing their power. That’s why the Council wants to make examples.”
I closed my eyes for a moment, forcing down my
irritation.
“I know what’s happening,” I muttered under my breath.
Jaxon’s return stirred everything. Those who once followed Cade’s reforms are turning now, because Jaxon’s back, especially the lower packs in the West faction.
“I’ve handled this before,” I muttered, scanning Damon’s report. “This feels more personal
now.”
“It might be,” Thane said. “Especially this one.”
He pushed forward a sealed envelope. I tore it open and froze when I saw the contents—a statement claiming I had conspired with Cade himself to become immune from disciplinary
actions.
“This is ridiculous.”
“A Practor must always be neutral,” Thane reminded gently. “And if the people believe Cade and
you are conspiring to protect each other…”
“…then neither of us is fit to lead,” I finished for him.
He nodded slowly.
My hands clenched into fists on the desk. “These are all personal endeavors,” I said through my teeth. “Every raid, every decision I made–I did them for the pack. I’ve never conspired with anyone. And Cade is my friend.”
“I know,” Thane said, placing a steady hand on my shoulder. “I know that you two are good men. But the world doesn’t always see that. You’ve both made quite a number of enemies. Be careful.”

“I am also in the face of justice,” he added before leaving. “And when the time comes, I’ll have to act as one. If the evidence keeps piling up… you might lose the chance of getting the title and Cade might lose his Praetorship.”

I was now on my way back to my humble home. I decided to walk to clear my head of everything that was happening.
I knew that Cade had a lot of enemies the moment he became Praetor. It came with the title- power always drew bloodthirst. I was a close second because my family had it out for me from the very beginning.
Especially now.
Five years into Cade’s term, the midpoint of the Praetor’s decade of leadership, things were shifting. The Council was tightening its rules. Every move we made was scrutinized, dissected, and debated by men who hadn’t lifted a finger to protect anyone outside their glass towers. The judicial council had grown stricter, and I could already sense where some of the pressure came from.
My so–called family.
The House of Trevanes had always been ambitious. They wanted a leader who could play along with their games, but I’d refused, and since then, I’d been their shame and their threat.
Now it seemed they’d gotten smarter.
Many from the United Factions had begun siding with them. I could tell by the tone of their letters and by the growing number of whispers that followed Cade and me like ghosts.
I sighed, rubbing a hand across my face. My head ached and my stomach churned. I glanced at my watch. It was well past lunch.
“Damn it,” I muttered under my breath, realizing I hadn’t cooked for Luna.
I hastened my steps and sighed in relief when I finally saw my abode. When I entered, she was already there.
Luna turned, smiling softly as she placed a steaming bowl on the table. “I already cooked,” she said, her tone light but her eyes distant.
I froze for a second, then smiled despite the fatigue pressing on my chest.

I sat, watching her move around the kitchen. My worries seemed to dissolve when I looked at her.
We ate together, but the air wasn’t quite the same. There was something in her silence. She wasn’t usually quiet like this.
After a while, I put my fork down. “Are you alright?” I asked.
She hesitated. Her hand tightened slightly around her spoon before she placed it gently on the table.
“Luna,” I said, leaning forward. “Tell me.”
Her gaze flickered to mine. “I heard something,” she started.
Something cold settled in my stomach.
“About a curse,” she added in a whisper.
My breath caught. The room suddenly felt smaller.
“The curse of your mate dying once she gives birth to your heir.”
