I could tell something was off the moment we got inside the car.

It felt like I was swallowing stones with every breath. Calista was dead asleep, sprawled in Corvin’s arms like a corpse as she lost a fight to intoxication. I sat beside them in the backseat, her head lolling dangerously close to my shoulder. Rowena was up front, stiff and silent, facing the windshield.
Ezra, Elias‘ Beta, was the only normal one. He had greeted us politely, opened the car door for us, and even apologized for not coming sooner. He stopped where the roads became too narrow and steep, and the moment Rowena stepped out of the car, I felt her mood again.
We walked the rest of the way, the wind cold and the forest eerily quiet. Still, she didn’t speak. Corvin didn’t speak. Even the unconscious Calista didn’t so much as snore.
However, the moment we arrived at the house, everything changed.
I didn’t even get a chance to take a step inside before Rowena shoved me hard enough that I stumbled over my own feet and nearly hit the floor.
I caught myself on the wall, blinking in shock.
Corvin entered behind us, carrying Calista. I could feel his eyes on me, but there was not an ounce of remorse or even pity. Then, he shook his head and headed to their room.
The moment the door shut behind them, I heard the click of a lock.
I frowned.
My feet shifted instinctively, body bracing to run.
However, Rowena moved faster.
A vase shot through the air–her weak telekinetic shove strong enough at this distance–and slammed into the side of my head.
It shattered instantly.
My ears rang; my vision blurred. I staggered, gripping the wall with one hand as ceramic shards clattered across the floor.

“What was that?” Rowena’s voice cracked.

I groaned, touching the side of my head. My fingers came away speckled with glittering dust from the vase, along with some blood.
“What…?” I mumbled, dazed.
“I gave you ONE CHANCE!” she screamed, voice so sharp it cut through my dizziness. “One chance to celebrate with us, and this is how you repay me?”
Her anger was so loud it filled the whole house.
“You made a fool out of Calista!”
I breathed through the pain. “She made a fool of herself-”
I shouldn’t have said that.
I realized it the second the words left my mouth.
Rowena’s face contorted before she lunged at me.
She grabbed the broom leaning against the wall and swung it so fast I barely lifted my arm in time. The first strike hit my shoulder. The second hit my ribs. The third cracked against my head, right where the vase had already disoriented me.
Pain flared in sharp, shocking bursts.
“Rowena, stop-” I gasped, stumbling backward.
However, she didn’t hear me, or she just didn’t care.
“You ungrateful brat!” she shouted between swings. “Flirting with Aiden. Flirting with Elias. You think I don’t KNOW what you’re doing?!”
“I wasn’t!” My words cut off when she smacked my leg hard enough to make my knee buckle.
“You were always like this,” she snapped as she raised the broom again. “This is why you should be kept in the darkness.”
I stared at her, breath trembling, chest aching with the blows. My pulse roared in my ears.
She raised the broom again.
She slammed it against my body before throwing it to the side.

Then, she decided that using her hands was the best way to go with this. In a second, her hands clawed onto my cloak, dragging me across the floor. My heels scraped against the wood, my palms burned as I tried to catch myself, but she yanked me too hard, and my body crashed into the wall.
“Get UP!” Rowena shrieked, her voice splintering with rage.
“That was supposed to be Calista’s chance to have a better life; but you just decided to ruin it all!”
My arms trembled, and my knees buckled as I tried to do so. Every inch of me felt bruised and raw. The vase had left a ringing in my ears that made it hard to focus, and every swing of that broom had left my skin stinging in different directions.
She didn’t let me stand. She gripped my hair, her fingers tangling deep into the roots, and yanked. I choked out a cry and stumbled to my feet only because she forced me up by pain alone.
My favorite red cloak was ripped away in one harsh tug.
It fell to the floor like a shed skin.
I reached for it instinctively, but she pulled my hair again, twisting my Her face was right in front of mine, appearing unrecognizable.
“You,” she spat, her breath hot against my cheek, “really are just like

your mother.”
I froze.
My mother was the person she never talked about. Rowena sneered, eyes scanning my face with something close to disgust.
“Your face,” she hissed. “Your personality. Everything. Exactly like hers.”
I felt queasy, but I didn’t even have time to think about it.
She dragged me again, this time slamming me into a wooden support beam. The side of my body throbbed violently. I gasped, blinking through the lights bursting across my vision.
“Rowena, stop. Please,” I begged.
“Shut up!” she screamed. “She never shut up either! She thought she was so perfect!”
I didn’t understand. I never knew the full story. They never told me anything.

“She even tried to take my husband,” Rowena hissed, chuckling in a manic, cracking sound that crawled under my skin.
I stared at her, breath trembling.
What?
What was she talking about?
Garrick?
“Oh yes, you
didn’t know, did you?” Rowena mocked, tightening her grip on my hair until tears pricked my eyes.
She leaned closer, her grin unnervingly wide.
“This face of yours is a weapon,” she hissed, each word dripping with venom. “Just like hers.”
A shiver crawled down my spine.
