The walk back wasn’t long, but I slightly wished it were.

It wasn’t because I had anything spectacular to say, but because the silence between us felt different tonight.
It felt… settled, like we were two people who had known each other for far longer than a few chance encounters in the woods. Her steps were quiet beside me, her cloak brushing softly against her legs.
I didn’t speak, but every now and then, I found myself looking at her. She kept her head slightly lowered as she walked, but her shoulders were relaxed.
Just as we reached the edge of the gathering path leading back into the celebration lights, someone popped out from behind a stall.
“There you are,” Rowena announced. “With Alpha Elias,” she added.
Mina’s shoulders instantly tightened again.
“Are you going back already?” I asked, straightening as I shifted my attention to Rowena.
She nodded once. “Yes, Alpha. Today was really fun. Calista sure had a blast because she’s out cold now. I’m afraid we have to head back,” she smiled. “This is such a good beginning. We’re looking forward to the lantern celebration.”
“Please do. We’ll make it worthwhile,” I answered.
Then, admittedly without thinking, I looked at Mina.
She stood with her head down. She looked so withdrawn at this moment. However, the memory of her just minutes ago flashed through my head. The complete contrast was quite hilarious.
Her beauty, too.
It was distracting.
Even with her entire face hidden by the shadows of her cloak, she was impossible not to stare

I shook my head sharply before the memory made its way any lower.
“Alpha?” Rowena’s voice snapped with irritation.

I blinked and looked down at her. The woman was frowning deeply now, eyes tight and lips pursed together.
I cleared my throat. “Right,” I said, pulling myself back to the conversation. “If you’re going Use my you. back, I’ll have one of my men send
car.”
“What?” Rowena exclaimed, but the shock didn’t last. Only a half second passed before it melted into absolute delight. “Alpha, that’s–my goodness, thank you!”
She glanced at Mina and then tugged her closer.
“That would be great. Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome,” I responded. “You can wait by the entrance. Ezra, my Beta, will be taking you back.”
Then I looked back at Mina. “Bye, Mina,” I said.
“Let’s see each other again soon.”
And before she could say a word, Rowena pulled her away, guiding her down the path toward the entrance.
I watched Mina’s silhouette disappear between the lit stalls. Her cloak fluttered once before she vanished into the crowd.
I smirked. She really had no idea what she did to me.
I turned, exhaling a breath that felt too warm for the night air, and my eyes instantly landed on a cluster of witches cackling around Ezra. He was leaning against a table, arms folded, with a smile.
I strode over, grabbed him by the back of his shirt, and tugged him away. His feet skidded across the dirt, a startled curse flying out of his mouth.
“Alpha–hey!”

I tossed him my keys. He caught them with both hands, staring at the familiar keychain.
“Go. Take someone home,” I said.
“Huh?” Ezra blinked. “Take who home?”
“They’re waiting by the entrance.”
A slow realization crawled across his face. His eyes lifted, narrowed, then dropped to the keys again.
“Using your car?” he asked.
“Yes,” I replied. “Use my car.”
His eyes widened, mouth falling open before pressing into a thin line.
“Why, Alpha?” he dared to ask, tone bordering on sulky. “Why can’t you do it yourself?”
I licked my bottom lip, casually shrugging. “Nah. Today’s ending was already perfect.”
“What about mine?” he exclaimed.
“Take them back, okay?”
He groaned, like I’d asked him to go to war alone. I raised an eyebrow. Ezra sighed in resignation.
“That’s a good boy,” I said, patting his shoulder.
He scowled.
“Keep them safe at all costs.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, trudging away with a defeated shuffle.
“Make it faster!” I called.
I chuckled, letting my shoulders relax as I turned away from the heart of the festival. I made my way back to the center, where my room was.
I stepped into a quiet corridor leading to my private quarters, my steps echoing as I reached my door. Just as my hand brushed the handle, my pocket buzzed.
A call.

I stared at the name flashing on the screen.
Mom.
Fantastic.
I breathed out through my nose and pressed answer.
“Son? Are you coming back home for the holidays?”
I froze halfway through pushing the door open.

I had told her I’d be home on the 24th. I hadn’t been home in a long time because of my duties.
However, I found myself not wanting to head back again this time.
Would it be too soon and presumptuous if I asked Mina to spend that day with me?
“…Son?”
I cleared my throat. “I don’t think so, Mom.”
“What?” she exclaimed immediately. “But you said you were coming home!”
Her voice dipped into dramatic sadness.
“It’s busy,” I said.
“But isn’t the election done?” she countered.
“Yes, but-
