She frowned, confused, as I grabbed a towel and moved behind her. She stiffened only for a moment when my hands gently gathered her hair. I draped the towel around it, patting carefully.

“You’ll get sick going to bed like this.”

“It’s just hair,” she murmured.

“Still,” I said.

She didn’t argue. That alone told me she was exhausted.

I plugged in the blow dryer and began working through her hair section by section. Her shoulders slowly relaxed.

I felt myself smiling–just a little.

I put down the hairdryer on the bedside table forcefully, startling her for a second.

Then, very gently, I touched her shoulder so she would look at me.
