No matter how hard I tried to hide it and brush it off, I couldn’t.

I tried to convince myself that Axe was lying and that he was merely trying to stir trouble. But the more I thought about it, the more that unease grew, spreading through me.

I didn’t even know Axe well. He was a stranger, a man I had only met by chance. So why was I letting his statement come between us?

That was why I decided I had to clear it up as soon as possible.

I wanted to hear the truth from him personally.

However, as I looked at him now, I began to regret asking the question. I waited for him to laugh, to shake his head, to tell me how ridiculous it was. I wanted him to tell me Axe had lied, that he’d made it up to frighten me.

But Abel didn’t say anything.

“Abel,” I said again, my voice trembling. “Please. Tell me it isn’t true.”

Still, he didn’t respond. He just stared at the plates in front of him, eyes glinting with something that looked too much like fear.

My stomach dropped.

“So… it’s true?” I whispered.

He closed his eyes, and the faintest movement of his head was enough to break me.

“You knew,” I said. “You knew all along?”

The silence was worse than any answer.

My vision blurred. “You played with me,” I choked out. “For all my life, people used me. My stepmother, my stepsister–everyone. I was nothing to them. I was just something to make their lives easier.”

He looked up then, seeing pain in every line of his face, but I couldn’t stop. The words came

“My friends, except for Marcel, weren’t even my friends. I was in the dark my whole life, Abel, and I got used to it.”

I didn’t even realize that tears were spilling down my checks. “But then you came. You made me think I could be happy. That I could have something good, for once. That I wasn’t just someone to use.”

He stood then, his chair scraping against the floor, but I stepped back. “Don’t,” I whispered.

“Luna-”

“But you’re telling me this now?” My voice broke. “You’re telling me I’ll die if I stay with you- when I already love you so much?”

The tears wouldn’t stop. I didn’t even try to wipe them away anymore. I hit his shoulder once, weakly, the sound dull and small. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I sobbed. “Why did you let me fall for you like this?”

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. That was all he could say.

I hit him again, harder this time, though my strength was gone. “I don’t want to hear that!” I cried. “Don’t you understand? You deceived me! You should have told me before any of this happened before I started loving you!”

“I’m sorry,” he repeated, voice cracking. He looked at me like each tear that fell from was something he couldn’t bear to see. “Don’t cry, please.”

“How could I not cry?” I shouted through my tears. “How could I not, when everything I believed in just shattered?”

He reached out, but his hand hovered in the air. “Please,” he whispered. “Don’t cry.”

But I couldn’t stop. I covered my face with my hands, sobbing so hard it hurt to breathe.

“I didn’t want this,” he said hoarsely. “You have to believe that. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“Then why?” I cried. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”

The sound of my crying filled the space between us until I thought it might drown me. Then, softly, he said my name.

“Luna.”

I looked up, and that was when I saw his eyes glistening.

“I love you,” he whispered.

The words froze me where I stood. My tears stopped for just a moment. I stared at him, unable to breathe.

“What?” I breathed out.

His eyes met mine, filled with pain and something deeper. “I love you,” he said again.

That was the first time he had said it, and even though I knew it wasn’t the right time, I felt a surge of happiness pulse through my veins.

Then I saw him. His chest rose unevenly, and for the first time since I met Abel, the Alpha who terrified even his enemies into silence, I saw him cry.

His tears weren’t loud. They came quietly. Something about it broke me more than his confession ever could. I reached for him instinctively, my hands trembling as I brushed my thumbs under his eyes. His breath hitched at my touch, his eyes shutting tightly as though my gentleness hurt more than any wound.

“Tell me everything,” I whispered, even as my heart pounded so hard I could barely hear myself.

He nodded, but his throat bobbed before any words came out. His voice cracked the moment he started speaking.

“My grandmother was a Lycan,” he said. “That made my father into a half–blood. A half–Lycan.”

“Our kind is feared and admired for its strength. However, there’s a curse we carried–the gift of life taken in exchange for passing on the bloodline.”

I stared at him, my fingers frozen where they still touched his face.

“My father tested out this curse, and my mother… she didn’t survive giving birth to me. He never told me until I was older. I thought it was just a coincidence, I was in denial for some time. However, I quickly realized that it’s true.”

“And

you think it’ll happen to me?” I whispered.

His jaw clenched. “I don’t think,” he said hoarsely. “I know.”

“I originally came to you,” he said slowly, “because I thought if I had an heir, I’d have the right to the title. I thought I could handle the curse. I told myself it was just the way it is…”

“Believe me, Luna,” he said. “Please. I love you. I don’t want to lose you. This is me begging.” His voice cracked at the last word, and his head bowed, his hands trembling on his knees.

The Alpha–my Alpha–was begging.

I wanted to scream at him for lying, for keeping this from me, and for making me fall in love with him, knowing what it could mean. But at the same time… how could I hate someone who was breaking right in front of me?

My body moved before my mind could stop it. I reached for his face, lifting it so he had to meet my eyes. His lashes were damp, and his pupils were dilated.

“I don’t know if I’m a lunatic,” I said softly, “but seeing you cry like this for me-” I smiled, though it trembled. “It only makes me love

you more.”

He looked stunned, like he hadn’t expected forgiveness, much less love.

I pressed my forehead against his and closed my eyes. “I love you, too,” I whispered before placing a kiss on his lips.

“We’ll figure something out.”
