I ran my fingers through my hair, my patience thinning as Tyson’s voice echoed through the phone.

“Why is he assuming my role when it’s still mine?” I asked, pacing the length of the porch outside Edith and Winston’s house.

“You already know the answer to that,” Tyson replied.

I clicked my tongue and shook my head. “Don’t worry, I’ll be there tomorrow. Don’t give him the permit. It’s within my power anyway.”

“I know,” he said. “I just thought of letting you know about it so you wouldn’t be surprised.”

“I’m not surprised anymore,” I muttered. Nothing Jaxon did could surprise me now.

Tyson hesitated, then sighed. “He’s also been bedding so many fertile women and checking their compatibility.”

I stopped pacing. “He’s already started, huh?”

“Started? I think he’s desperate. He wants a Luna before the next full moon. You know what that means.”

“I know,” I said quietly.

Because Jaxon rejected his true mate, he needed to find one whose essence could merge with his. One who could balance his energy long enough to produce an heir.

A slow exhale left my lips as I looked up at the sky. The stars were dim tonight. “The full moon…” I murmured. It was a little over a month away. And before it rose again, I needed Luna to understand and agree to this.

The irony didn’t escape me. At this point, I didn’t know if I was any better than Jaxon.

Tyson cleared his throat on the other end. “Anyway, just a heads up,” he said, pulling me back from my thoughts. “I don’t know what you’re doing out there in Ylarc, but I’m expecting good

news.”

“Good news,” I repeated dryly. “You’re always expecting good news.”

“Because I want to see you in love!” he replied casily. “Aside from that, the title needs to be with you, Abel. I could already see the West crumbling into pieces if Jaxon takes it back.”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “Yeah, yeah,” I muttered.

“You don’t have to worry,” I said finally. “I’ll handle it.”

“I’m sure you will,” Tyson said, but I could hear the curiosity creeping into his tone. “Wait, hold on.”

“What now?”

“Perhaps, are you looking for someone–in Ylarc of all places?”

“Let me in. Who is it? Is she pretty?” she added right away.

I exhaled sharply, shaking my head. “You talk too much.”

“Come on, Abel. I haven’t heard that tone from you in years. You’re hiding something.”

“I’m not hiding anything,” I lied smoothly. My eyes drifted toward the window again, where I caught a glimpse of Luna’s hair catching the faint light.

“Come on!” he exclaimed. “Let me in. We’ve been friends for five years. I at least have the right to know-“”

I turned off the call before he could pester me further, shaking my head.

With that, I went back, my mind suddenly preoccupied by Luna. Or, maybe, I just didn’t want to admit it, but she had been consuming my mind the entire day. She seemed much more complex than I had realized.

I pushed open the wooden door and stepped inside. The faint scent of meat and roasted vegetables still lingered in the air. Sol and Noelle were seated across from Luna, who looked like a tomato about to burst. The way her shoulders were drawn up to her ears and her hands fidgeted on the table made me pause. Sol was trying to stifle a grin, and Noelle wasn’t even trying. She was openly beaming.

Cute.

Wait, no. Not cute. She’s just human.

“What are you doing?” I asked, breaking the silence, before Luna could actually burst.

Noelle nodded with suspicious enthusiasm. “Truly.”

My brows furrowed. “What are they talking about?” I asked, glancing at Luna.
