“I’ll give you some time to think about it. I’m sure you have something else you want. I’ll give you that if you consider my choice.”
He said those words a little while ago. The way he said it made it appear like he was asking me to borrow a pencil, not asking me to carry his child.
Now, somehow, we were here.
We were in the house of an older couple named Edith and Winston, whose warmth felt unreal compared to everything else I’d experienced today. I had no other description to give their house other than it felt like home. There were small trinkets on the shelves–carved wolves and family portraits with smiling, good–looking faces.
“Luna, right?” Edith asked as she placed a plate in front of me. Stewed vegetables glistened beside tender meat and a thick slice of bread that looked homemade.
I nodded, still awkward. “Thank you for accommodating me here.”
“No worries,” she said with a warm smile. “Your name is very pretty. It’s very fitting for our
kind.”
My cheeks warmed instantly. “Right,” I muttered. “Because you’re… wolves.”
I still wasn’t used to saying it out loud, but Edith and Winston chuckled when I acknowledged their kind.
Abel was already seated across from me, eating in a composed manner.
Across us, Noelle sat with Sol and watched us with the biggest grin I’d ever seen. She looked like she was physically trying not to squeal.
When our eyes met, her smile widened even more,
I panicked, quickly bowing my head and stabbing a chunk of meat with my fork. “It’s really good,” I said and began eating like I was in a contest.
The food was truly divine, enough to distract me from the heavy silence sitting between Abel
and me.
He hadn’t said a word since we got here. Not one.

Chapter 322 Twelve Inches
How could he be so nonchalant when he had literally asked me to carry his child?
I still couldn’t process it. Who even says that?

My spoon clinked too loudly against the bowl, and I forced myself to breathe slowly. Across the table, Abel continued eating without a single care in the world.
I caught Noelle stealing glances between us, and her grin grew mischievous every time our eyes met. I gave her a tight, nervous smile before shoving more stew into my mouth.
Get it together, Luna.
However, every time I looked at him, I remembered the feel of his warmth. My face burned, and I quickly took another spoonful of stew to distract myself.
It’s not like we haven’t done it before. In fact, it felt like I could still feel the outline of him in
my…
I shook my head. Nope. No. We were not going there.
I focused on the table instead. Edith and Winston were discussing something about “increasing stocks in the pack clinic.”
Just then, Abel’s phone buzzed.
He reached into his pocket and answered. “Yeah?”
His deep voice filled the quiet room. His brows furrowed, and he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. “He gave a permit to Damon again?” he muttered, a sigh escaping his lips. “I’ll be there tomorrow.”
Without another word, he stood, nodded politely at Edith and Winston, and walked out of their home. The sound of the door slamming shut echoed through the wooden walls.
Just then, Edith stood. “We should go give Owen some of this stew,” she said, turning to
Winston.
Her husband nodded, grabbing his coat. “He didn’t have the chance to eat lunch because he was tired from another work trip.”
And just like that, the two of them disappeared through the same door Abel had left from, leaving only me, Noelle, and Sol behind.
The moment the latch clicked shut, Noelle lunged across the table.

“Oh. My. Goodness. I have so much to ask you!”
I turned to her. “Huh?”

Her eyes were huge and sparkling. “You’re his mate, aren’t you? Oh my goddess, I can feel it. The way he looks at you. I’ve never seen Abel look at anyone like that!”
She didn’t even pause. “You’re human too! This is insane! Do you know how rare that is? Oh, I have so many questions–when did he find you? Did you know about the bond before? What did you feel when he touched you? You’re basically living in a real–life book right now!”
I just sat there, frozen, a spoon still in my hand and stew halfway to my mouth.
Noelle leaned closer. “Luna, you have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into.”
My eyes widened, and I nearly choked on a pea.
“She’s always like this,” Sol said with a sigh, shaking his head. “It’s better to answer her questions. She won’t stop until you do.”
“Umm… hi?” I managed.
“Hello!” she chirped. “I’ll take it slow since it looks like you’re overwhelmed. You’re human, right? And you’re mates?”
“Yeah,” I muttered, heat creeping up my neck. “He said so.”
She squealed. “This is the best! I thought I wouldn’t be able to witness another love story after Tessa and Rowan, but lo and behold, here you guys are! Oh, this is worth missing Arden and Cade’s saga. But seriously–this cross–breed thing is genius! The Moon Goddess is a genius!”
Sol chuckled beside her, sipping his water. “You’re going to give her an existential crisis, Noelle.”
Noelle gasped. “Oh, I’m sorry! You must be overwhelmed. But honestly, Abel’s the type no one expected to have a mate at all.”
“Why?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“Because he’s… Abel,” she said simply and didn’t expound any further.
“He looks at you with that gaze,” she added suddenly, clasping her hands dramatically.
“What gaze?” I asked, confused.

“You don’t know?! It’s like he’s trying not to devour you alive!”
“You’re exaggerating.”
Sol raised an eyebrow. “She’s really not.”
