I gasped when I saw the veins on his hands pop up as he gripped Queenie’s wrist. A shriek escaped her lips from what I was assuming was pain.

“Let go!” she snapped, struggling to pull free.

Abel didn’t budge. His jaw clenched, and his eyes darkened. When he finally released her, it wasn’t gentle. He shoved her back, causing her to stumble.

Her heel caught on the floor, wet with the spilled milkshake.

Everything after that felt like slow motion.

Queenie’s hand flailed for balance, her other arm knocking against Princess’s table. The tray toppled. Plates crashed. Syrup and fries and milkshake poured over her straightened hair as her back hit the floor with a wet splatter.

The table tilted, sending what remained of Princess‘ food and one entire milkshake right onto her and her friends.

The next few seconds were chaos.

I dropped the mop and my hand flew to my mouth. I didn’t know whether to be horrified or laugh.

Before I could say anything, Abel’s hand shot out and wrapped around my wrist. He pulled me gently, guiding me behind him, his broad shoulders blocking my view of Queenie.

“Abel,” I whispered, my heart hammering from nervousness and something fluttery.

His attention stayed locked on Queenie, who was already standing again, dripping and livid.

“You-” she sputtered, her voice trembling with rage. “You dare put your hands on me? Do you have any idea who I am?!”

Abel stood still, shielding me from her view.

“Move aside,” she barked, taking a step forward.

Queenie lunged, but Abel’s arm came up, barring her path completely.

I pecked out from behind him, only for her glare to land squarely on me. Her hair was sticking to her cheeks, streaked with milkshake, but her eyes still managed to pin me down.

“What did you feed this man to make him defend you like this?” she hissed. “What did you promise him, huh?”

“He doesn’t know the real you,” she continued, pointing at me with a shaking, sticky finger. “He doesn’t know you’re a parasite. You latch onto people with your pitiful eyes and pretend you’re some saint, but you’re not. You’re your mother’s daughter through and through.”

“Enough,” Abel said.

“Excuse me?” Queenie barked, incredulous.

He exhaled and massaged his temples. “Your voice,” he said, “is making my head hurt.”

Her face turned scarlet.

“She’s telling the truth!” Princess blurted, stepping forward. “My mom gave her everything, and she’s ungrateful! She doesn’t even appreciate the roof above her head! She’s been using us all along.”

Queenie straightened, crossing her arms, looking smug now that her daughter had joined in. “See? Even she knows,” she said. “You’re not fooling anyone.”

Abel clicked his tongue softly, shaking his head.

“You can stop pretending,” Princess said again. “She probably doesn’t even have enough money to pay you anyway. Just drop the act before she drags you down with her.”

Abel turned slightly, and I saw his profile.

“She’s not pretending,” he said simply.

“Excuse me?” Queenie asked with a frown.

“She’s not pretending,” he repeated. “She’s kind and strong. She doesn’t like inconveniencing people, even at her expense.”

My heart skipped a beat.

How did he notice that?

Abel took one small step back, enough for me to stand beside him. Then he reached for my hand again.

His fingers brushed mine first before he intertwined them completely.

I froze.

The warmth was familiar now, but the meaning behind it wasn’t.

Queenie’s mouth dropped open slightly. Princess‘ eyes went wide.

I heard their breaths hitch–theirs, not mine.

Mine was already gone.

I looked up at him, but he didn’t look back. His gaze stayed locked on them.

“She’s not what you think she is,” he said. “And you’d do well to remember that before you try to humiliate her again.”

What the hell was happening? Why was he so sweet at the moment?

I didn’t understand it.

It seemed Queenie knew it was useless to argue with Abel, so she turned to me again.

“You! This is how you repay me?” she shouted. “Everything I have is yours.”

I frowned. That wasn’t true, and we both knew it. It was the opposite. Everything that had been mine, she had taken, renamed, and made her own.

“Since you’re ungrateful like this,” she hissed, her eyes glinting with rage, “I’ll give you what you want. Leave. Pack your bags and go. We don’t need you here. Just go! I’m disowning you, you bitch.”

My breath hitched.

The world went still. I could hear my own heartbeat thudding painfully inside chest.

I had nowhere to go. I didn’t have the money to rent anything decent, at least, not in this city.
