It was the kind of moment that warranted laughter, maybe even holding up my middle fingers in the air for good measure. However, Queenie was still the one who had the power to throw me out on the street if I so much as looked at her and Princess the wrong way.

So instead, I swallowed my laughter and tucked the rag into my apron pocket before walking toward Abel’s table.

Queenie’s glare burned into my back as I approached him, and Princess‘ sharp eyes followed me like a hawk’s. The only one who looked completely unfazed was the man causing all the chaos in the first place.

“What would you recommend?” he asked.

I cleared my throat. “Oh, the chicken and waffles,” I said. “It’s sweet and salty. Most people like it.”

He tilted his head slightly. “I don’t like sweet things,” he muttered.

“Oh. Then maybe… the bolognese pasta? The chef’s Italian.”

“I’m not in the mood for anything acidic,” he replied.

I pursed my lips. “Then maybe a cream–based pasta? It’s light and not too greasy.”

“I don’t want pasta,” he said, meeting my eyes.

I stared at him, narrowing my gaze slightly. Was he doing this on purpose?

“We have sandwiches,” I offered.

“I don’t want bread.”

I closed my eyes briefly, pressing my lips together to keep from saying something I’d regret.

Alright, as hot as he was, he was actually pretty annoying, huh?

Shouldn’t he be older and, I don’t know, more mature or something?

A smile, brighter than I’d ever seen from him, appeared on his lips. It appeared genuine, and it made something inside my chest flutter.

“I’ll take the chicken and waffles,” he said simply.

“You just said-”

“I changed my mind,” he interrupted, still smiling.

I frowned, crossing my arms briefly before giving up with a quiet huff. “Fine. I’ll ring that up for you.”

I turned on my heel before he could see the faint smile threatening to creep up on my face.

The second I stepped behind the counter, Queenie’s hand shot out, grabbing my wrist tightly.

I gasped, the sting of her nails digging into my skin. “Do you know him?” she asked sharply.

My pulse quickened. I could feel Abel’s gaze from across the diner, appearing to be watching

every move.

“No,” I muttered quickly, shaking my head.

Her grip tightened. “Liar,” she hissed. “Princess told me that he’s someone you know.”

My stomach dropped.

I turned slightly, and sure enough, Princess was sitting by her table, her glossed lips curved into a smirk.

“You’re truly just like your mom,” Queenie said, capturing my attention once more. “Bagging rich and handsome guys while pretending to be shy and helpless. It must run in the family.”

“Don’t,” I said softly, my voice trembling despite how hard I tried not to. “Don’t bring my mom into this.”

Queenie tilted her head, her smirk widening. “Why not? It’s true, isn’t it?”

“You don’t know her,” I whispered softly. “Stop acting like you do.”

Queenie said nothing for a moment, then clicked her tongue and turned toward the register. “Go bring his order to the kitchen,” she said curtly, “and stop causing scenes.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat, turned away, and grabbed the order slip from the counter. My eyes burned, but I forced them to stay dry.

As I walked toward the kitchen, I caught Abel’s eyes again. He was still watching, and his gaze had turned softer.

I looked away before I could decipher it, slipped the order into the kitchen window, and whispered to myself, “It’s fine. You’re fine.”

But even as I said it, I could still feel the heat of his gaze on my back.

When it was time to give him the plate of chicken and waffles, I made sure to act extra quickly so he wouldn’t ask any questions. However, he still managed to grab onto my hand. The familiar spark flared between our skin again. It didn’t surprise me anymore. It was crazy how I had grown accustomed to it just from a few touches today.

“What did she tell you?” he asked.

I swallowed. “Nothing,” I said softly.

He didn’t look convinced. His gaze lingered on me for a second longer. Then he glanced down at his plate. “Taste it,” I said quickly, trying to distract both of us. “It’s my mom’s recipe.”

It looked like he didn’t want to drop the subject, but he surprisingly obeyed.

Abel cut a piece of the chicken, dipped it lightly in syrup, and tasted it. His brows furrowed slightly before he nodded. “It’s good,” he said simply.

I couldn’t help but smile. “I’m glad.”

Then the bell over the counter rang. Another order was ready, and it was most likely for Princess‘ table. The universe just loved balancing good moments with pure annoyance.

“Wait a second,” I told Abel. He just nodded, eyes following me as I went to grab the tray from the counter. I balanced the tray carefully. It had three plates, two milkshakes, and one side of fries. I forced my best polite smile as I approached their table.

Princess was in her usual spot, surrounded by her little court of gossiping minions.

“Here you go,” I said, setting down the tray.

Just as I placed the last milkshake, one of her friends “accidentally” tipped it over—

“Oh my God!” Princess gasped, jumping to her feet as the chocolate milkshake dripped down her skirt. “What the hell, Luna?”

Princess scoffed dramatically. “You did it on purpose! You’ve been jealous since the moment you saw me with Joshua!”

The entire diner turned to look at us. I could feel Abel’s gaze from across the room.

“What? I don’t even-”

“Oh, please,” she cut me off. “Everyone knows you’re still trying to get his attention. You even hired that guy for a day just to prove it, right? That’s because you can’t stand that someone else gets more attention than you for once?”
