If there was one thing I’d learned so far, it was that Abel Trevane was too stubborn for his own good.
After he said that line, “Can’t your boyfriend take you to work?” I thought he had lost his mind. However, right after, he went right back to his usual, unreadable self, driving straight toward the diner like nothing had happened.
I crossed my arms, sinking deeper into the seat, watching the familiar streets blur past the window. Every turn we made brought us closer to the one place I least wanted him to see.
When he finally parked the car in front of Princess‘ Diner, my heart sank. I could already see the bright pink neon sign flickering above the door.
And, of course, because my life loved to humiliate me, Princess was there with her friends already.
I groaned under my breath. “You really can’t,” I muttered, unbuckling my seatbelt halfway.
He turned to me, one eyebrow lifting. “Why not?”
“Because you just can’t,” I said, looking straight into his eyes.
I didn’t want him to.
He didn’t know what kind of life I lived. What kind of small, suffocating world existed behind that door. I didn’t want him to see Queenie and Princess order me to clean the floor they’d just walked on. I didn’t want him to see me for me.
“I don’t know why you came here,” I said softly. “And how you found out where I study, but-”
“I have something to talk to you about,” he interrupted.
“What is it?”
“I can’t tell you right now,” he said. “I’ll wait until your shift is over.”
“I told you,” I sighed. “You can’t come with me. You can’t just wait here.”
His expression didn’t change one bit. He just clicked his tongue, leaned back slightly, and gave me a maddeningly calm look. “I’ll wait.”

“No, you won’t.” I shot back. “Abel…”
He leaned in closer.
I froze.

For a second, everything went still. My breath caught in my throat as I felt his proximity. My hands tightened on my lap, every muscle going rigid. “Abel,” I whispered, though it came out more like a plea than a warning.
My heart was pounding so loud I could barely hear the sound of his quiet exhale as he came even closer, the space between us dissolving. I could feel the warmth radiating off him and the soft brush of his breath against my skin. Then, with a faint click, the tension broke.
He was removing my seatbelt.
His hand brushed against my shoulder as he pulled the strap away from me, and I could feel every second of contact. My breath hitched, and before I could say a word, he leaned in again.
My eyes fluttered shut. I didn’t mean to. It just happened.
When I opened them again, his lips were a fraction of an inch away from mine. He didn’t move back, torturing me for a second too long.
“I’m going in as a customer,” he whispered.
All I could do was stare at him incredulously.
“So,” he said, a small smile appearing on his lips, “you can’t stop me.”
Then, before I could protest, he leaned back in his seat, one hand casually reaching for the car door.
“You can’t,” I whispered again, even though it was pointless now.
Then, without another word, he opened the door and stepped out of the car.
The moment Abel stepped inside, I already knew I was doomed.
He had barely crossed the threshold when Queenie visibly lit up. I’d never seen her greet anyone that fast in my life. “Welcome, handsome!” she said, her voice an octave higher than usual.
And then, to make matters worse, she actually giggled.

It appeared like Queenie didn’t just want to serve him food–she wanted to serve herself on the platter, too.
I nearly laughed when Abel walked past her, straight to a booth away from Princess and her clique’s usual spot. But naturally, that didn’t stop them from noticing.
Princess and her friends turned their heads almost in sync. Their chatter faded into little gasps and whispers, eyes wide as they stared.
I could already imagine what they were thinking.
Abel sat down, one arm over the backrest. Gosh, he really did look like someone straight out of a magazine. The crisp black shirt, the sleeves rolled just enough to show his veins, the dark hair falling slightly over his eyes. It was unfair, really.
I tore my gaze away and ducked into the supplies room. My reflection in the small mirror above the sink stared back at me–cheeks red, lips slightly parted, eyes wide and frazzled.
Great. I looked like someone who’d just been caught in a scandal.
I ran my fingers through my hair, muttering under my breath. “You’re fine. You’re normal. You face customers all the time. He’s just-” I paused, sighing. “He’s Abel.”
And that was the problem.
Taking a deep breath, I placed the eggs on the counter and the chicken in the freezer before grabbing a clean rag to wipe the counters with. I went out to go to my post. However, to my horror, Queenie was already hovering near his table, notebook in hand, wearing a very bright smile. She didn’t do table service unless it was someone rich or handsome. In this case, Abel seemed to be both.
She didn’t see me come out of his car a while ago, so she probably had no idea we knew each other. I wanted to keep it that way for a moment, although something in my mind wanted to push her away from him.
She leaned slightly toward him, twirling her pen between her fingers. “Is that car outside yours?” she asked, pointing her pen out the window toward the black vehicle.
He didn’t even look up from the menu. “Hmm,” he hummed noncommittally.
She giggled again.
I nearly gagged.
“How old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?” she pressed, fishing for something.

I pretended to focus on wiping the counters, but I was listening. I didn’t even try to hide it. I was curious about his age, too.
