LIAM
Dylan’s smirk vanished and the gun disappeared beneath his jacket as if it had never existed. “It’s nothing,” he replied smoothly, flashing a look at his men. “Come on.”
Just like that, they turned around and left, but not before Dylan's eyes cut into me one last time like a silent promise.
When the doors swung shut behind them, I finally exhaled. Thank heavens. My legs trembled but I forced myself to stand tall. “I’m sure that Kye’s in trouble,” I muttered, turning to the team. “Whatever he’s mixed in, it’s not safe and we can’t allow anybody to come and just try to see him before he’s awake. Until he can defend himself.”
No one argued, their faces were grim, but they nodded. “You’re right.”
“We’ll guard him,” Asher said. “We’ll take shifts, two at a time so when somebody’s tired, another will come and we’ll stay in groups. No one will get through.”
I nodded, relief washing over me. “And I’ll make sure the police keep watch too because those men look really dangerous.”
But even as I spoke, my chest tightened. This wasn’t just about Kye anymore, it was about me and my family now. Trouble was pressing at the edges of our lives and I could feel it pushing harder every day.
I left the guys and went to my father’s room, he was already dressed to leave and a nurse was hovering near his wheelchair. As I told him what happened and what plans the guys and I had made and decided on, his jaw clenched and his hand gripped the armrest until his knuckles became white.
“As much as that guy saved your life,” he finally spoke up, his voice low and controlled, “his family is a mess and I don’t want you involved in this.”
“I can’t just ignore it,” I argued. “I can’t just say no or not protect the guy. This is the least I can do to save his own life after he took a bullet for me, dad. If he hadn’t—“ I broke off, my throat burning. “I’d be the one in that bed and I’m not about to pay him back by abandoning him.”
His eyes softened but only for a moment. “Then repay him by staying alive. Don’t let his family drag you down too.
“I’m not asking to be part of their world,” I said. “I just want to make sure that he survives this. After he wakes up, everyone can go their separate ways.”
Silence stretched, heavy and sharp then my father let out a sigh. “Fine,” he uttered. “But you’ll do it with police support because I don’t trust that Dylan backed off just like that.”
Neither did I.
The plan held on for a week. We rotated, taking turns at Kye’s door and sometimes I sat alone, listening to the steady beep of machines inside, wondering why secrets were locked behind his closed eyes. Sometimes Asher or another teammate sat with me, and we would whisper, always circling back to the same disbelief.
