Lemira went straight to the coffee shop downstairs. Mrs. Sinclair was already waiting at a table.
After she sat down, Mrs. Sinclair slid a check across the table.
Lemira glanced at it. "What's this?"
"Name your price."
Lemira looked at the wealthy woman across from her. "I don't recall this being our arrangement. You said Orion was deceiving me. What was it about?"
"I was lying."
Mrs. Sinclair's expression was a bit unnatural. "I was just trying to test you, but I didn't expect Orion to overhear. I was originally going to bring up the fact that he hid his identity from you, just to drive a wedge between you."
Lemira felt certain Mrs. Sinclair wasn't telling the truth.
"Just write a number on the check. The money will be in your account today."
Lemira laughed out loud, took the check, and began writing.
Seeing this, Mrs. Sinclair's lips curled into a contemptuous smirk. Just as she thought—greedy.
After Lemira finished writing, she handed the check back.
Mrs. Sinclair took it, and her eyes widened in shock. "How much?"
Lemira had filled the check out to the maximum possible amount.
Lemira's tone was flat. "Weren't you the one who told me to name my price? Having second thoughts now?"
Mrs. Sinclair downed her coffee in one gulp. She couldn't believe Lemira had the audacity to ask for nearly a billion dollars.
Where would the Sinclair family get that kind of cash flow?
The Sinclair family was on the verge of bankruptcy; they didn't have that kind of money.
Lemira stood up. "So you can't afford it. I guess that means Susanna isn't worth much to you after all. Maybe it's more cost-effective for her to just stay in jail."
"Stop right there!"
Mrs. Sinclair was furious. "Do you really think a small matter like this is worth so much money?"
Fortunately, everything went smoothly.
After returning to the university, she received a call from Debby. "Mrs. Sinclair went to that auto shop. According to our informant, the mechanic was the one who met with her, but we don't know what they discussed."
"I understand. This means Mrs. Sinclair might really know something about the car crash back then."
Lemira's mood lifted. It felt like she was getting closer to the truth.
After she hung up, Stella approached her. "I've checked on the Sinclair family. It seems no one from their family was in a car crash in Lyria that year. On that particular day, Mrs. Sinclair wasn't even in Lyria. The family had just closed a deal on a new energy project and were all attending a celebratory conference."
Stella even produced an old photograph. "Here's the proof. The conference lasted from afternoon until evening. The Sinclairs wouldn't have had time to go to Lyria, would they?"
Lemira looked at the photo. "Is everyone from the Sinclair family in this picture?"
"Yes, all of them."
Lemira studied the group photo and the red banner hanging nearby. "This new energy project... why does it sound so familiar?"
"Have you heard of it? It was a project from many years ago. It's how the Sinclair family made enough money to break into the circle of wealthy families. It's a shame they haven't had any other successful projects since then. They've just been living off their old achievements."
