Hanging up the phone, Chloe collapsed into the sofa, silent tears sliding down her cheeks.
She knew she was being ruthless. She knew this was vicious, and that she was completely destroying an innocent person's life.
But she had no other choice.
To survive, to stay by Sammie's side, and to keep everything she had fought for, she had to do this.
I'm sorry, Martha.
If you want to blame someone, blame your own bad luck.
-
Eleven o'clock at night.
Sammie returned to the villa.
The entire house was suffocatingly quiet. Everyone kept their heads bowed, not daring to breathe too loudly, their faces drained of color.
The moment he stepped through the door, his overwhelming, lethal aura pressed down on the room, making it hard to breathe.
"Boss," the butler stepped forward, his voice quivering. "The investigation has begun. We are pulling all security footage, and everyone who came into contact with Miss Rebecca is waiting to be questioned."
Sammie didn't look at him. His gaze swept across the living room, eventually landing on Chloe, who sat on the sofa with red-rimmed eyes, looking the picture of fragile concern.
He paused for a fraction of a second. That tiny sliver of suspicion flared up in his mind again, only to be forcefully suppressed.
"How is Rebecca?" Chloe stood up, her eyes glossy with tears, appearing incredibly delicate and deserving of pity.
"I've been so worried... How could she suddenly be poisoned? Who could be so cruel..."
Her performance was flawless. Gentle, kind, worried, and terrified.
She looked exactly like his usual obedient, understanding fiancée.
Sammie looked at her, his dark eyes entirely unreadable. "She's still in the ICU. Not out of the woods yet."
"How could this happen..." Chloe covered her mouth, a tear slipping free. "I just brought her some broth this afternoon. Even though she didn't want to drink it, she was perfectly fine. How did she suddenly..."
By bringing up the broth on her own accord, by volunteering the fact that she had been in contact with Rebecca, she managed to seem completely transparent and innocent.
Sammie's brows furrowed slightly. "Where is the broth?"
"I... I cleaned it up and washed the bowl..." Chloe replied instantly, her gaze not wavering in the slightest.
