"Poisoned?"
The word hissed through Sammie's clenched teeth, as cold as ice.
He froze completely, feeling the blood in his veins instantly turn to sludge.
It wasn't organ failure from her hunger strike.
It wasn't just her body giving out.
She had been poisoned.
Someone had brazenly tried to take Rebecca's life, right under his nose.
A towering, explosive fury detonated in his chest, threatening to tear him apart from the inside out.
He clenched his fists tightly.
"Who did it."
It wasn't a question; it was a death sentence.
"We're running further toxicology reports, but we can confirm the poison was ingested very recently."
The doctor continued, "We've thoroughly pumped her stomach and administered antidotes. Her vitals are temporarily stable, but she is far from out of the woods. She needs to be transferred to the ICU immediately for 24-hour observation."
"Let me in," Sammie demanded, his voice raspy. "I want to see her."
"Mr. Sammie, you can't go in there yet—"
"I said, I want to see her."
His eyes were terrifyingly cold, flashing with a lethal, world-ending brutality that warned he was moments away from losing absolute control.
The doctor didn't dare stop him any longer. Giving a quick nod, he had a nurse do a basic sterilization protocol before letting him inside.
The ICU was a sea of stark white, the machines humming with cold indifference.
Rebecca lay in the hospital bed, tubes connecting her to various monitors, a ventilator aiding her breathing. Her complexion was still so pale it was almost translucent, her lips entirely devoid of color.
Her eyes were closed, her brows slightly furrowed, as if she were still trapped in a nightmare of agony.
The proud, unbending Rebecca was now as fragile as glass, looking as though a single touch would shatter her.
Sammie stepped up to the bed and slowly crouched down, gently taking her IV-free hand into his.
It was freezing, delicate, and entirely lifeless.
"I'll find them," he whispered, his voice trembling under layers of suppressed rage and grief. "Whoever did this to you... I will make them pay a hundred times over."
"Just hold on."
