Rebecca lay on the bed, completely motionless.
Her eyes were tightly shut, her chest perfectly still without the slightest rise of breath. A chilling aura of death surrounded her.
"Miss... Miss Rebecca?!"
The maid reached out with a trembling hand, gently brushing against her wrist.
There was no pulse.
Nothing at all.
"Help!"
The maid screamed in pure terror, her soul practically leaving her body. Stumbling and tripping over herself, she bolted out of the room and sprinted downstairs like a madwoman.
"Mr. Sammie! Boss! Something's wrong! Miss Rebecca... she's dying!"
The piercing scream instantly ripped through the dead silence of the entire villa.
Sammie had been in his study reviewing files. The moment the words 'Miss Rebecca is dying' hit his ears, his mind went entirely blank. He froze, his blood feeling as though it had turned to ice in his veins.
Operating purely on instinct, he shot up, sending his heavy chair crashing violently to the floor.
Without a second of hesitation, he sprinted out of the study like a man possessed, tearing toward the second-floor guest room.
Every step felt like walking on jagged glass.
Every second stretched out like an agonizing century.
He didn't dare to think about it.
He couldn't fathom the possibility that something had actually happened to Rebecca.
He had kept her by his side, fighting with everything he had to protect her, stopping her from going to Africa to throw her life away—not so she could die in his house, right in front of him.
He had sworn that as long as she was alive, as long as she was safe...
He was willing to be hated by her for the rest of his life, willing to bear the condemnation of the entire world, just as long as she lived.
But now...
Sammie burst into the guest room, his eyes locking onto Rebecca on the bed.
In that instant, his entire world completely shattered.
