Marian walked in and said, “Sir, Luke is here.”
Max replied, “Let him in.”
Luke and Greg came into the living room. Luke spotted Felicia and hurried over, worry written all over his face. “Felicia, are you alright?”
Felicia gave a small shake of her head. “I’m okay.”
Greg and Luke had spent the day out of town at an exhibition. Just as they were about to leave for the Capital, Jeremy called. He told Greg what happened with Felicia at the hospital. They drove back immediately. Now, seeing Felicia safe and sound, Greg finally let out a breath.
He had planned to take Felicia home with him. But when he saw Anne, his heart softened. “Do you want to go home?” he asked Felicia.
Anne suddenly grabbed her mother’s hand and looked at Greg, her little voice soft and pleading. “Mommy is staying here with me tonight.”
Greg crouched down and gently patted Anne’s head. “Then you have to look after Mommy, okay?”
Anne nodded seriously. “I promise I’ll take good care of Mommy.”
Greg smiled and didn’t say anything more. He stood up and turned to Felicia again. “Where’s your phone?”
He’d tried calling her all day and never got through.
Felicia answered, “I lost it. I’ll go get a new SIM card tomorrow.”
Greg nodded and glanced at Max, his eyes full of caution.
Max said, “Don’t worry. She’ll be fine here.”
Greg and Luke left the villa. Felicia stood at the top of the steps, watching them go. The cold wind slipped through her thin clothes, tossing her long hair around her face.
Max looked over at her, then reached out and pulled her gently into his arm. Felicia stiffened for a second, looking up at him, their eyes meeting.
“Come back inside,” Max said softly. “You’re still not well. Don’t catch a chill.”
