His voice was calm now, nothing like the forceful, threatening tone he used to have.
Felicia kept her eyes on him, searching his face for any clue to his real thoughts, but he gave nothing away.
Noticing how cautious she was, he offered a relaxed smile. “I’m not going to do anything to you. I’m just here to stay with Anne. What are you so worried about?”
“If you really want to leave, I won’t stop you.”
Max’s sudden change threw Felicia off completely. Was he honestly just letting this go? No conditions, no demands?
She couldn’t trust it, not for a second. After a silent pause, she slowly set the contract down.
“I don’t need this contract,” she said quietly. “If I couldn’t win it back on my own, maybe this deal just isn’t meant for me.”
Max glanced at the contract, then picked it up again. “If you don’t want it, I won’t try to change your mind.”
He tucked it away with care.
His behavior was so out of character, Felicia had no idea what he was up to.
“Andrea was behind what happened today,” she said.
She remembered being dragged out of the hotel by Jeremy, catching a hazy glimpse of Andrea. It was too much of a coincidence, her showing up there, just like she had in Northwick. Andrea just couldn’t let things go.
The funny thing was, it was Max who had saved her both times.
Felicia could practically picture Andrea’s bitter, frustrated expression.
“I’ll handle it,” Max said. “I’ll make sure you get a result you’re happy with.”
His words caught Felicia off guard. After a beat, she let out a laugh. “And how are you going to do that? Don’t you know exactly why Andrea keeps coming after me?”
She knew the real problem was standing right in front of her.
Max’s face barely changed. “ I’ll do whatever it takes to make it up to you. Except a divorce”
On the surface, it sounded like he cared about her too much to ever let her go.
