Outside, the wind rattled the windows, but inside, everything felt warm and cozy.
Once Anne drifted off to sleep, Felicia leaned against the headboard, scrolling through the project files Max had sent her. Every detail of the TC Project was right there on her tablet. Max was always so calculated, always chasing profit. If he was willing to give up something this valuable, it could only mean he was after something even bigger.
So family mattered more to him now. Was that it?
A faint, mysterious smile play on her lips. She set the tablet aside and turned to look at Anne, fast asleep next to her. Moving slowly, Felicia lay down and kissed Anne’s forehead.
The next morning, Felicia woke up feeling completely refreshed. Anne was awake, too, but she refused to leave the bed, snuggling into her mother’s arms and whining playfully.
Then someone knocked on the door.
A moment later, the door opened and Max stepped in. He wore a light gray cashmere sweater and black straight-leg pants. His hair was a bit tousled, and he looked softer than usual, almost boyish.
“Daddy,” Anne called, her voice bright.
Max came closer. “Do you want me to bring breakfast up for you?”
Anne stayed nestled against Felicia. “Yes, Daddy. Bring it up for us.”
Max reached over to gently pinch her cheek, then headed out to get their meal.
Felicia got Anne out of bed and started the morning routine, helping her wash up and then attempting to braid her hair.
Anne watched her mom in the mirror, frowning a little. “Mommy, the braids aren’t right.”
Anne was such a little fashionista. She loved having her hair done just so, always with cute clips and the nicest clothes. Every piece in her wardrobe was specially designed, thanks to Max. At the Ross family’s house, Anne’s braids were left to Ava.
