Jeremy cut a sandwich in half and offered it to Ivy. It was stuffed generously with beef and egg.
Ivy took a small bite. The food had not gone bad. While the taste was not anything extraordinary, a meal made by a child's own hands was truly the best kind of food.
"How did you and Heather meet, Miss Manning?" Jeremy asked suddenly.
Ivy paused, looking up at him before explaining. "Felicia organized a dinner a while back."
Jeremy nodded thoughtfully and did not press the matter further.
Ivy watched him carefully, wondering if he thought she had orchestrated this whole encounter on purpose. But recalling Felicia's insightful words, she reminded herself that Jeremy was not an ordinary man. The most important thing was for her to maintain the absolute right attitude.
With that calming thought, she composed herself and asked smoothly, "How much longer will you be in Boston for your business trip?"
"About three more days," Jeremy answered. "Then I need to head back to New York."
"Your work here must be quite demanding," Ivy noted.
"Yes, there are some specific matters I need to handle personally. What about you, Miss Manning? Did you travel here entirely alone?" He had not pried into her personal affairs, so he was genuinely unaware of her true reason for being in the city.
Ivy gave a brief, honest explanation of her situation.
"How is Jeremy doing?" Jeremy inquired suddenly. "I heard he was severely injured."
Ivy was deeply surprised. "You know about that?"
"Yes, I heard about it just yesterday."
It was not particularly surprising that such news would quickly reach his ears. "He is fine now. He just needs a solid period of rest to fully recover."
"That is a huge relief. If something serious had happened to him, the consequences for the Manning family would have been absolutely disastrous."
Jeffrey had finally managed to wrestle power back from the branch families, but he still needed time to completely consolidate his position. A misstep at such a critical juncture could easily trigger a severe backlash, leading to devastating results.
Hearing Jeremy's candid words, Ivy felt a lingering sense of cold dread.
"It is actually a very good thing Luke is focusing his attention on Willa right now," Jeremy added.
