Anne answered her father's call. "Daddy."
"Mom wants to talk to you," Max said.
Anne's eyes instantly lit up. "Okay."
Max handed the phone to Felicia. She took it and brought it to her ear. "Anne." Calling her daughter's name felt incredibly natural, a pure instinct.
"Mom!" Hearing her mother's voice, Anne grew even more excited, though it quickly dissolved into a pout. "Mom, you haven't been home in so long. Why did it take you so long to call me? I called you, but you never answered."
Anne's sweet, tearful voice tugged at the deepest strings of Felicia's heart, bringing waves of sorrow crashing over her. "I am so sorry, Anne." She wanted to explain, but she had no idea how. She certainly could not let Anne know that she currently remembered absolutely nothing.
"I am very good at home," Anne promised. "I am waiting for you to come back."
A sharp sting prickled Felicia's nose, and her eyes welled with tears. "Okay. You are such a good girl. I will come back soon."
"Okay."
After ending the call with Anne, Felicia sat in silence, taking a long moment to steady her breathing and calm her frayed emotions. Max just sat there, watching her quietly.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Max rose and stepped out of the bedroom. He opened the door, stepping aside as the hotel staff rolled in a cart and arranged a lavish breakfast spread on the living room dining table.
Returning to the bedroom, Max looked at Felicia. "Go eat your breakfast first."
Having gathered herself, Felicia met his gaze, stood up, and made her way to the living room. Max headed into the bathroom to wash up. When he emerged, he found her sitting quietly at the table, eating. His gaze drifted to her lower abdomen. Remembering how thin she had felt in his arms last night, he noted that her belly was visibly more pronounced now. He walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat across from her.
Felicia looked up at him.
