Max's voice dropped to a freezing register. "Did you come all this way just to tell me that?"
"I want to ask about Anne's schooling," Felicia replied steadily. "What are your arrangements for her?"
"You do not need to concern yourself with Anne's affairs anymore," he stated. His tone was like forged steel, leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.
Felicia's face tightened with frustration. "Max, can you please stop acting so impulsively? Have you actually given any serious thought to what is best for Anne?"
"Felicia, what gives you the right to question me?" Max snapped.
Felicia froze as he began closing the distance between them. His impossibly handsome, frostbitten face came into sharp focus until he was looming directly over her. "Tell me," he demanded, his words dripping with venom. "What exactly gives you the right to question me?"
Felicia's hands balled into tight fists at her sides. She fought desperately to keep her emotions in check. She did not want to fight with him. Coming here had clearly been a massive mistake. "I am sorry for bothering you," she finally whispered.
Without another word, she turned to grab the lunch container and marched toward the door. Her fingers had barely grazed the doorknob when his dark, menacing voice echoed from behind her. "If you walk out that door, you will never have anything to do with Anne ever again."
Felicia's pupils dilated in shock as a terrifying chill shot straight up from the soles of her feet. Her body went completely rigid. Slowly, she turned around, her eyes turning red as she stared at him in disbelief.
It took her a long time to find her voice. "Max, I have never done you wrong. What gives you the right to strip away my parental rights?"
