The car slowed to a halt outside the grand iron gates of Hawthorne Manor. Felicia sat quietly in the backseat for a long time before finally gathering the strength to push the door open and step out.
Just then, another vehicle emerged from the manor grounds. The occupants spotted her and immediately hit the brakes. Amber and Wyatt stepped out of the luxury sedan and walked over to greet her.
Amber approached with a warm but perceptive smile, clearly noticing the lingering redness around Felicia's eyes. "Felicia, are you here to see Anne?"
Felicia nodded, her voice still sounding a bit hoarse. "How is she doing?"
"She is doing alright," Amber reassured her. "Mandy is keeping her company right now."
"That is good to hear," Felicia replied softly. "I came to bring her home."
Amber hesitated for a moment. "Anne is actually spending time with her great-grandma right now. Maybe you could wait a couple of days to pick her up. It would line up perfectly with the start of her new school year."
Felicia's expression instantly darkened at the mention of the delay. Sensing the sudden shift in her mood, Amber frowned in concern. "What is wrong? Did you and Max have a fight?"
Felicia ignored the question entirely. "I am going to see Anne first."
Amber quickly fell into step beside her. "I will come with you."
Felicia gave a brief nod but remained silent as they walked through the courtyard toward the main house. Wyatt leaned against his car, choosing to stay behind and wait.
Half an hour later, Amber escorted Felicia back out of the manor. Felicia bid them both a quiet farewell.
"Take care of yourself," Amber told her gently. "I will call you on the first day of school."
The private elementary school they had chosen for Anne was the same one Mandy and Randy attended. Felicia agreed to the arrangement. Since Anne was currently busy comforting Miranda, they had decided Felicia would take her to school on opening day instead. With that settled, Felicia climbed back into her car and departed.
As they drove back into the city, Wyatt glanced over at his wife. "Did Felicia and Max get into another argument?"
Amber let out a heavy sigh. "It certainly looked that way. Max really is not cut out for marriage. He should have just stayed single. If the family had not forced them to tie the knot back then, I doubt he ever would have settled down or had kids. Anne truly is a gift from God for a man like him."
