Juniper called Joshua to deliver the news.
"Joshua, I never got a response."
There was a long silence on the other end of the line.
"Should I try talking to her one more time?" Juniper asked softly.
"No need," Joshua replied, his voice completely void of emotion. "If she's not willing, then let it go."
"Are you officially giving up on her?" she asked tentatively.
"Yes. I'm done waiting."
Juniper let out a quiet sigh.
Even after everything, they had still ended up exactly where she feared they would.
...
When Stella opened her eyes, the sky outside was only just beginning to lighten.
It was still early, but sleep was completely beyond her reach.
She wiped a layer of cold sweat from her forehead and got out of bed to grab a glass of water.
She had dreamt of a nightmare she hadn't had in years.
In the dream, Joshua was marrying a total stranger.
To this day, the vivid, agonizing heartbreak she felt watching them exchange rings felt sickeningly real.
And now, that nightmare was bleeding into reality. It felt entirely surreal.
She checked the time. The three-day deadline had long since expired.
Her silence was her answer.
She knew Juniper would understand, and so would Joshua.
Yet, an unrelenting, suffocating wave of despair settled deep in her chest, refusing to fade.
Stella knew exactly what was happening. Juniper had been sent as Joshua's final ultimatum.
Now that it was over, she figured Joshua would finally move on for good.
Washing up in the bathroom, Stella stared at her pale, hollow reflection in the mirror.
Her appetite had been completely non-existent lately. She forced down two bites of breakfast before pushing the plate away.
