Nivera shook her head, her fingers still resting against his check. “You keep saying that. But the world’s never fully secure, Alejandro. There will always be another problem, another enemy. ” You can’t keep running on fumes. You’ll break.”
“I’m not that fragile, Cabezota.”
“Even iron bends,” she murmured.
His gaze softened, but he said nothing. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were filled with concern–a kind of quiet, stubborn affection that disarmed him more than any bullet ever could.
“You need sleep,” she whispered.
“I’m fine,” he murmured.
“No,” she countered, her tone turning gentle but firm. “You’re not. Lie with me, at least. Just for a while”
He blinked, caught off guard. “I’m okay just sitting.”
“Come here, Alejandro,” she said firmly, patting the empty space beside her.
Alejandro stared at her as if she’d just asked him to commit treason. “Nivera, you’re injured. You need space
to-”
“I said come here,” she repeated, her eyes narrowing playfully despite the fatigue. “You’ve been pacing and fighting the entire world tonight. For once, just stay still.”
He stared at her like she’d lost her mind. “You’re in a hospital bed.”
“Exactly. And there’s plenty of space, all thanks to the room you got me.”
He raised a brow. “You’re supposed to be sleeping, not inviting me to share your mattress.”
“Then stop talking and do as I say.”
The corner of his mouth twitched, amusement flickering through his fatigue. “You’re bossier when you’re injured.”
“And you’re impossible when you’re tired,” she countered. “Come on, Alejandro. Just for a while.”
He exhaled, shaking his head with an incredulous smile. “You’re impossible.”
“Maybe,” she murmured, “but you love that about me.”
That earned a low chuckle from him–rare and quiet, but real. He hesitated only a moment longer before giving in with a small sigh. “If the doctor walks in and finds me here, you’re explaining it.”
“Gladly,” she said, smiling faintly.

He moved carefully, lowering himself onto the bed beside her, mindful of her bandaged side. The mattress dipped under his weight, the space between them shrinking until she could feel the faint warmth of his body.
Nivera shifted slightly, curling toward him, and before he could protest, her head was resting against his
chest.
Alejandro froze for a heartbeat–every instinct screaming to stay still, to not move, to not disturb the fragile peace in her breathing. But then her arm slid around his waist, soft and sure, and something inside him unraveled.
“Relax,” she murmured, her voice muffled against his shirt. “I’m not as injured as you think I am.”
He let out a slow breath and wrapped one arm around her waist, drawing her closer, his fingers tracing idle circles along her back.
They stayed like that for a long moment, neither speaking. The sound of her heartbeat pressed against his chest, syncing with his own–steady, rhythmic, grounding.
“This is better,” she whispered after a while, her voice drowsy. “You see? You can rest too.”
Alejandro looked down at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. “So pushy.”
She hummed against him. “Someone has to keep you alive, and you don’t care enough to do that yourself.”
He brushed his fingers through her hair, slow and absent–minded.
Her words lingered in the air, soft and heavy. He tightened his hold slightly, his thumb tracing the curve of her shoulder.
For the first time in days, his pulse began to slow. The rage, the violence, the cold precision that had fueled him through the night—all of it dimmed beneath the weight of her warmth.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against the crown of her head. “Sleep, Cabezota,” he whispered. “You need it.”
Her breathing evened out against him, soft and steady. Within minutes, she was asleep again, her hand still resting over his heart as if she could hold it still.
Alejandro lay there, staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet hum of the machines and her breathing. For a man like him–used to noise, to chaos–this silence felt like heaven, and it was all thanks to the woman in his
