However, before she left, she needed one final reassurance that he’d be fine and so, she flew into his arms, squeezing him tightly and inhaling his scent.

Alejandro immediately wrapped his hands around Nivera, squeezing her gently. Fuck, to be hugged by the one you loved. It was a feeling second to none, and he couldn’t believe this was what he had made a vow not to ever experience.

“Be careful and come back to be in one piece,” Nivera whispered to him. She couldn’t deny how much she loved Alejandro and even though she knew he wouldn’t love her back, she was content with just having him around.

“I will, and try not to worry too much,” he responded. Asking her not to worry was asking for the impossible, and they both knew.

“I will,” Nivera nodded as she let go of him. He placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

“Stay safe,” she told him as she opened the door and got out. Antonio had been watching quietly outside the car during their interaction.

“Good morning,” he greeted.

“Good morning, Antonio,” she greeted back.

“My driver will drop you at the mansion.”

“Good luck,” Nivera wished him, and he nodded. The exchange was swift. Antonio slid into Alejandro’s car, while Nivera slid into Antonio’s.

The door closed, and Alejandro’s car rolled away, leaving her alone with her heart in her throat.

A few minutes later, the car stopped in front of Antonio’s mansion, and she was met by Zabelle.

“Oh, goodness,” Zabelle exhaled in relief the moment she stepped out of her car.

Nivera tried to muster a smile, but her worry bled through her features. “Hi.”

“Hi, come on in,” Zabelle said, leading her into the mansion.

The mansion was quiet, heavy with the kind of silence that pressed down on your chest. Nivera’s hands twisted together as they walked deeper inside.

She felt like she was teetering on a knife’s edge, and Zabelle’s presence was both a comfort and a mirror- because she could see the same storm of fear reflected in her friend’s eyes.

They were both scared, even though they were trying to act like they were okay.

They settled in the sitting room, but neither of them could relax. Zabelle’s phone was in her hand, her thumb flying across the screen as she scrolled and refreshed, waiting for Antonio’s promised updates.

“You know he’ll be too busy to look at his phone, right?” Nivera sighed.

“I know,” Zabelle sighed as well. “This is clearly a calculated attack.”

“Yeah, but the world doesn’t care about that. This is just another opportunity to dunk on the Garcías, and the men need to handle this before they go after who did this.”

“I hope they reach the bastard, whoever it is, a lesson they’ll never forget.” As Zabelle spoke, her eyes subconsciously glanced at her phone.

Nivera refused to touch her phone, as she knew she’d immediately run to text Alejandro as well, and it’d kill her more if he didn’t respond.

“Bet they will!” she responded to Zabelle. “Okay, we need to get our minds occupied with something else, or we’ll lose it.”

They didn’t know how long it’d take for Alejandro and Another to get the situation under control, and until they did, it didn’t look like they’d hear from them.

“You’re right!” Zabelle agreed as she grabbed the TV remote. “What do you want to watch?” She asked as she began to go through the options.

“Hey, have you heard from Alejandro yet?” Zabelle asked suddenly, her voice tight. They had barely managed to get their minds off the chaos happening outside, as nothing they tried worked.

Nivera’s head snapped up. “No, he hasn’t.” She tugged at her hair in frustration as she checked her phone, which she had brought out during the course of the movie. “Oh my goodness, this is so frustrating!” she finally snapped.

Zabelle reached over, catching her wrist before she could tug too hard. “You’ll rip it off if you keep tugging,” she chided gently. But her own eyes flickered back to her phone, worry etched in every line of her face.

“I’m worried,” Nivera admitted, her voice breaking on the truth. She had been sent here so she wouldn’t spiral alone, but it didn’t feel like it was working.

The two women were drowning in fear together, clinging to each other when the waves pulled too high.

When Zabelle’s breaths quickened, Nivera would murmur reassurances she barely believed. When her own chest tightened, Zabelle would squeeze her hand back.

It was a fragile rhythm, but it was something.

“You know what, let’s check the news,” Nivera suggested finally, needing something–anything–other than the suffocating silence of waiting.

Zabelle nodded quickly, flipping through her phone. Nivera leaned closer, her stomach twisting. The screen lit up with a breaking notification, and she watched Zabelle’s face drain of colour as her eyes scanned the headline.

The words carved through the room like a blade. Nivera froze, her pulse lurching into panic, as this wasn’t what she expected to see.

They then read an article about the whole thing, and Zabelle’s phone slipped from her trembling hands, clattering against the marble floor.

“Zabelle-” Nivera reached for her, but her friend was already folding onto the couch, her breaths shallow and ragged.

Nivera’s own chest clenched. This wasn’t just an attack on their empire. Whoever was behind this wanted to destroy them piece by piece, body by body, reputation by reputation.

Her mind spun back to Alejandro. If Antonio could be targeted like this, what about him? What if he was next? What if-

Her phone buzzed suddenly, jolting her. She fumbled for it, her hands shaking, half–expecting Alejandro’s name on the screen.
