He had been sitting beside the bed all night, Nivera’s hand in his, his eyes fixed on her chest rising and falling beneath the blankets.

He hadn’t allowed himself a second of sleep mainly because he couldn’t and also because he was scared that if he didn’t watch Nivera, something would happen to her.

That wasn’t until now, when exhaustion dragged his head against the cushion.

The vibration startled him awake. He squinted against the dim light, checked the caller IDand hissed under his breath.

It was his secretary at work. If he was calling him then that meant something had happened and so, he answered the call without any further hesitation.

What?Alejandro raked a hand down his face.

But before he could say more, the voice on the other end launched into frantic urgency. Whatever Alejandro heard had his expression transforming, his jaw locking, his eyes darkening until they were almost black.

What?he barked, too loud, too raw.

The sound jolted Nivera awake. She blinked at him, blearyeyed, her voice husky from sleep. Alejandro?

Her gaze caught the storm brewing across his featurescreased brows, tense mouth, fingers digging into his knee. Alertness surged through her like ice water. He was angry.

She sat up straighter despite the ache still gnawing in her lungs. What happened?she whispered to him as he was still on the call.

He stroked her hair as he listened to what the caller had to say while signalling that he’d answer her question

soon.

Barely a minute later, Alejandro ended the call and dragged a hand through his disheveled hair, exhaling sharply. One of the hotelsit caught fire last night.”

Nivera froze. What?

Her pulse spiked. The memory of smoke still clung to her throat, the charred taste lodged in her chest. For a second she was back there, gasping for air, Alejandro’s arms the only thing keeping her from the flames.

That can’t be a coincidence, she whispered. Her voice trembled, but her certainty did not. The warehouse catching fire couldn’t have been said to be a workplace accident but one of the family hotels in the same night?

It wasn’t.

民国

His gaze flickered to hers, and in that silent exchange, she saw the grim agreement there. I know,he murmured. It’s too neat, too fast. Someone’s moving against us.

Before she could respond, the phone buzzed again in his hand. Another call. This couldn’t be good. He stared at the screen for half a beat, then answered.

The conversation was shorter this time, clipped and sharp. By the time he dropped the phone onto the bedspread, Nivera could see the lines of fatigue around his mouth deepen into something heavier.

What is it?she pressed.

His throat bobbed as he swallowed. The company. They’re investigating the company for money laundering and drugs.” His tone hardened, but underneath she could hear itthat sliver of warning, the unspoken truth. There’s talk of arrest warrants.”

Her eyes widened. Arrest?

Yes.He didn’t soften it, didn’t try to dress the word in anything gentler. His gaze was steady, holding hers. For me and Antonio.

Her heart clenched, panic clawing at her chest. Alejandro in handcuffsthat image seared through her like a blade. Alejandro

I know.He reached over, catching her chin between his fingers before her fear could spiral. Don’t worry too much,he said firmly. We’ll handle it.”

She stared at him, but there was no room to arguehis eyes were steel, unyielding.

Get ready. His voice dropped: He rose, pulling the phone into his hand as he headed for the door. I’ll change. Can you be ready in ten minutes.

Yes, of course,she nodded.

Alright, I’ll go get ready as well,he told her as he turned to leave.

The door clicked shut behind him, leaving her sitting upright in the bed, her pulse a storm.

Nivera pressed a hand to her chest. Her body still trembled faintly from the smoke, her lungs sore, but it was nothing compared to the ache of worry twisting inside her. She had always known Alejandro carried dangerous weight on his shoulders, but hearing itmoney laundering, drugs, arrestsit felt like standing on the edge of a cliff with the rocks crumbling beneath her.

Her throat tightened as she tried not to think about it too much. Alejandro had said he’d handle it and she had faith that he would.

She moved quickly, going to have a bath, dressing and brushing her hair into something neat, looking good was the least of her worries at that moment.

Minutes later, Alejandro was waiting by the door, already in a fresh suit, his tie knotted sharp, his features carved into ruthless lines. He looked like a man walking into battle, and stillwhen his eyes found her, something softened. Just for a second.

Come,he said.

They descended the stairs together. Outside, Martins had the car already waiting. Alejandro slid into the back with her, phone pressed to his car again before the door even shut.

Calls after calls, orders barked, names thrown into the air like knives. Alejandro’s voice was low, dangerous, controlled chaos in motion.

Nivera sat beside him, her fingers clenched around the fabric of her shirt, trying not to fidget. Every time the word warrantor investigationslipped out of his mouth, her stomach knotted tighter.
