Director Grant found another excuse. “There’s something I need you to confirm.”
Milka lifted her wrist, tapped her watch, and grinned. “It’s after hours. I’ll swing by your office this afternoon instead, okay?”
With that, she slung her bag across her body and headed out.
Since everyone worked in the same building and there were only a handful of elevators, running into each other was inevitable. Director Grant had met Anya before. At first, he thought she really was Milka’s little sister, but it turned out that was just a nickname—the two had only recently become friends.
Anya noticed Director Grant, too. She didn’t care what others thought of him—she just knew she wasn’t a fan. When Friday finally rolled around, Anya wasted no time. As soon as work was over, she dashed straight to her boyfriend’s studio.
“Chad, I think that director has a crush on Milka. Shouldn’t you let Uncle Mars know?” Anya fretted, genuinely worried that Director Grant would swoop in and steal her Milka.
Leo wasn’t the type to meddle in other people’s love lives. Instead, he grabbed a chair and set it next to his desk for her. “Come here.”
Once Anya sat, Leo spun her chair so she was facing him. “Forget other people’s drama. Tell me about yours. Are you making trouble for me at the office? You’re so pretty, sweet, and clever—there’s probably a line of people trying to snatch you away from me.”
Anya giggled and shook her head. “No way. I told everyone I already have a boyfriend.” That settled, she still couldn’t help but worry about Milka. “But I really think Uncle Mars and Milka’s relationship is a little risky.”
Leo grinned. “Silly Anya. Mars might look laid-back, but if things get serious, nobody’s taking anything from him. Don’t forget—he’s Mars. If he’s good at anything, it’s fighting for what’s his.”
Anya’s face lit up with relief. “Then I can stop worrying.”
She was fiercely loyal to her people.
As usual, Leo buried himself in work while Anya kept him company. Even if she didn’t understand the details, she’d sit nearby flipping through a book, happy just to be close. At the end of the day, they’d head home together.
Anya started gathering her things. “Nope, I want to see him. Plus, I promised. Chad, I’m heading out.”
“You off to see Denny or Max?” Leo asked.
Anya replied, “Hmm, first little Henry, then Wayne tomorrow.” Only Anya ever called Henry “baby.”
“I’ll drive you,” Leo insisted.
Anya tried to wave him off, but Leo wouldn’t take no for an answer.
The sound of Leo’s car leaving with Anya echoed down the hallway. From her office, Alyna heard it too, and her mood soured even more.
