Anya tried to reassure herself, chalking up her moodiness to PMS. Maybe her period was on the way—her feelings were swinging all over the place.
At first, she couldn’t get used to Leo coming home so late every night. But after a while, it just became part of her routine.
When she felt lonely, she’d call her little brother on video chat.
The second Blake’s face appeared on the screen, Anya’s whole face lit up. “Blake, did you miss your big sister? I miss you so much!” she gushed.
Blake pouted and blew her a kiss through the camera. Anya’s heart melted—she just wanted to teleport home and squeeze him tight.
Meanwhile, Leo made it to the office and threw himself into work.
That evening, he met with a big-shot client, but the contract talks were rocky.
Chunky and Alyna both looked pretty down. Leo stared at his computer for a bit, then finally asked, “Alyna, how’s that background check on Ms. Anya’s company going?”
Alyna’s voice was sharp, almost mocking. “Is this really the time to worry about something so irrelevant?”
Before Leo could answer, Chunky jumped in. “Of course it matters. Anya’s business comes before anything else.”
Alyna just shrugged, baffled. “I think entrepreneurs should always put the company first. Feelings can wait.”
Chunky rolled his eyes. “That’s because you don’t get how much Anya means to Leo.”
Chunky nodded. “Got it. Leo, do we keep trying with Mr. Miles?”
Leo nodded. “If there’s still wiggle room on the price, I’ll handle it myself. You two get back to your own work.”
That night, Leo worked until midnight. He glanced at the clock, stood up, switched off the lights, and got ready to head home. “Chunky, let’s go.”
The two of them headed out together.
Upstairs, Alyna watched them leave. She knew she could’ve landed a job at some big corporation—she definitely had the chops—but she wasn’t interested in chasing after someone else’s crumbs. She wanted to make her own way, build something from the ground up.
That’s why she’d chosen this scrappy little startup, sticking around to help it grow. She had no doubts Leo was the best boss she’d ever had: sharp, tough, a true leader. But there was one thing she just couldn’t get behind—his girlfriend. In Alyna’s eyes, Anya was little more than a pretty face, always clinging to Leo and cooing his name, never actually pitching in. To her, Anya was just a delicate ornament, totally useless when it came to the real work.
