Sweet Mischief’s Rollercoaster Romance novel Chapter 1640

Annie let out a sigh. “Even if I went back, I wouldn’t get to see the kid. Who knows where her dad’s taken her off to this time.”

Asher had come over just to catch a glimpse of his daughter, but Conner grinned, shameless as ever. “That’s gonna cost you.”

Asher shot him a look. “Keep it up and I’ll bring out the heavy artillery. Don’t test me.”

Conner just smirked. “Try it, and my girl will never call you godfather again.”

Asher jabbed a finger at him. “You just wait. Mars is going to give me a little girl too.”

Conner perked up. “Wait, Mars is pregnant?”

Asher rolled his eyes. “You’re living under a rock. Milka came back already.”

Conner scoffed. “…You’re the clueless one. And let’s be real, you don’t even have a daughter.”

Asher looked like he was ready to throw down. “Don’t push me, man. Keep it up and I’ll make sure I have a daughter too.”

Conner grinned wider. “Yeah, right, old pumpkin. Even if you did, no way she’d be cuter than mine.”

The argument heated up again, voices bouncing off the walls, while little Lizzy stood wedged in the middle, her big round eyes blinking as she watched the grown-ups bicker.

On the other side of things, Anya was making her own way—she’d landed a job all by herself.

Leo didn’t find out until Anya had already finished her probation period.

That night, they sat down for dinner together. Anya had come home early, swung by the supermarket, and cooked up a table full of fresh veggies. Leo set down his fork and asked, “Ms. Anya, why didn’t you tell me you went out job hunting?”

Anya nibbled at her chopsticks, grinning sheepishly. “Chad’s been so busy lately! I wanted to surprise you…” Her voice trailed off, a little uncertain.

She was worried Leo would be upset she hadn’t told him.

And sure enough, Leo didn’t look happy. “Which company? What do you do there? No matter how busy I am, you always come first. Haven’t I told you that?”

Anya puffed out her cheeks and mumbled a soft, “Okay,” as she ate.

Leo could tell he’d scared her earlier, so he scooped more food onto her plate. “Eat up. Get some rest after. I’ll head back to the office for a bit.”

Anya nodded, her mouth still full.

Dinner passed in an unusual, heavy silence.

After they ate, Leo looked over Anya’s contract, snapped a photo, and sent it to Alyna before calling her up. “Hey, Ms. Anya found herself a job. Check out her company and have Mr. Zhao look over the contract.”

He listened for a moment, then added, “I’ll be back at the office soon. Make sure my workspace is ready—Mr. Miles is coming in tonight.”

Leo handed the contract back to Anya, slipped on his shoes by the door, and waved, telling her to get some rest before heading out.

Anya watched Leo leave, her chest tight and achy, a sadness she just couldn’t shake.
