Unable to help herself, Sarah glanced down at the paper bag again, wishing its content had magically transformed. But no such luck awaited her when she peeked through the paper bag’s opening. It was still the same black and white lace material that she saw earlier.
It was light and airy, scant in fabric but with a lovely design.
After a few seconds of mentally preparing herself, Sarah covered her face in resignation and leaned in to whisper to Renee, “Underwear.”
“Under…what are we talking about?” Renee was puzzled, wondering if she had heard correctly.
“It might’ve gotten mixed up with his stuff when he moved out…” Impossible.
Sarah wasn’t sure if it was an accident or not.
For some reason, she thought Marvin might have taken it on purpose. It seemed like something he’d do.
But if he couldn’t use it, why keep it?
Was he planning to return it now?
Did he have a screw loose or something?
So, maybe it was an accident after all.
Renee looked at the small paper bag, her curiosity piqued.
She also felt there was something strange about it.
It was accidental.
Even if it was a mistake, how could Marvin only notice after so much time?
And such things…Was it even possible to mix them up by mistake?
Marvin’s head was once injured, but his eyes were fine!
“Renee, getting involved with him was a mistake,” Sarah admitted, sprawled on the couch, her gaze fixed on the ceiling.
She regretted saving a wolf simply because she felt she owed him from their childhood.
With hindsight, she saw numerous other paths she could have taken. Keeping him close wasn’t necessary.
“Did you ever think…maybe he actually likes you?” Renee suggested.
Their past conversations had painted Marvin as too ruthless, someone who hid behind a mask of politeness, making it hard to believe he could genuinely care for anyone.
Yet, Renee couldn’t shake off the thought.

Ever since she recognized her own feelings for Marcelo, she realized true affection couldn’t be masked in one’s
eyes.
Marvin’s attention seemed to always be on Sarah whenever she was around.
Sarah dismissed the idea. “Liking someone is fleeting. Emotions, especially those driven by hormones, can’t be trusted.”
But then, as if an afterthought struck her, Sarah quickly said, “I didn’t mean to offend! You and Marcelo are perfect together. Being liked by you is the luckiest thing in his life!”
Renee, unfazed by Sarah’s doubt in love, playfully warned, “Watch out. He might hear you say that!”
Meanwhile, Marcelo and Marvin were tied up in a discussion of their own.
What started as a non–urgent meeting in the study turned into a moment to seal their agreement.
Their collaboration wasn’t for profit but for personal advancement. Marvin was using his family’s clout to assist Marcelo in establishing himself in the consumer goods market, in return for Marcelo’s innovative energy solutions to curb Tobin Hill’s influence.
Tobin, with Quincy’s backing, had emerged as Marvin’s top competitor.
Tobin was Marvin’s cousin, not much younger than him. Tobin wasn’t very talented, but Shelton adored him. Putting Tobin in charge of the Hill family would make him Quincy’s puppet.
“You’re really eager to sort this out, huh?” Marcelo remarked, putting his signature on the document.
Marvin didn’t beat around the bush.
“Sarah hates seeing our family in such a mess.”
The dynamics within the King family were complicated, most were not straightforward or clean.
A mess?
Marcelo found the comparison fitting.
The King family was indeed a mess as well in his heart.
But he wasn’t interested in tidying it up.
That seemed like too much work.
Switching the person in charge seemed a simpler solution.
Half an hour later, Marcelo and Marvin were descending the stairs when they saw Renee by herself on the sofa, checking her emails.
“Sarah’s already gone,” She quickly pointed out, noticing Marvin looking around for Sarah as he stepped out of the study.

Marvin’s expression tightened a bit, clearly annoyed by the news.

“Mr. King, Mrs. King, I’ll be going now.” With Sarah not around, Marvin saw no reason to stick around any longer.
“Marvin, let me show you out,” Rence offered, but before she could finish her sentence, Marcelo looked her way.
A look of lazy annoyance crossed his face at the thought of her escorting another man out, clearly bothering him on the spot.
“I’ll take care of it,” He stated firmly, placing his arm around Renee’s waist as a sign for her to remain where
she was.
Renee hadn’t really planned on accompanying Marvin to the door.
Just as she was about to say something, Marvin said, “Mrs. King, if you have something to say, just go ahead.”
Their discussion was about Sarah, after all.
“Mr. Hill, are you thinking of going after Sarah?” Renee asked.
Marvin replied with a question, “Mrs. King, are you asking to give your blessing or to object beforehand?”
Renee chuckled. “Your actions don’t hinge on my approval, Mr. Hill. While I can’t prevent you from chasing her, if I discover you have bad intentions, or if you make Sarah unhappy in any way, I won’t stand by!”
Essentially, she was cautioning him.
Marvin nodded and left.
The moment Marvin disappeared, Renee lightly hit Marcelo on the shoulder, showing her irritation. “Hey! Seriously, Marcelo, do you have too much free time that you’re now setting up Marvin and my friend?”
“Setting them up?” Marcelo sounded puzzled.
“By inviting Sarah over and then Marvin, aren’t you just giving him a chance?” Renee raised an eyebrow and continued, “I didn’t know you and Marvin were tight. Mr. King, looks like you’re pretty popular!”
“We’re not exactly friends,” Marcelo clarified. They were allies, at best.
The reason behind today’s invitation was simple.
He didn’t want Sarah feeling left out, tagging along with him and Reed after work.
Yes, he was that selfish.
Whenever he was swamped with work, he’d ask Sarah to keep Renee company. But once he was available, he preferred to have their space to themselves.
