"How could he possibly be caught?" Renee gasped, her voice trembling with shock. Nicholas had always been meticulously cautious, and his research base was so well-hidden that it bordered on the invisible. How could the authorities have found him?
Richard let out a cold, sharp laugh. "That is what happens when you offend people who shouldn't be offended. So, you’d better think long and hard before your next move, or you'll have to deal with the consequences yourself." Without waiting for a response, he hung up.
Renee stared at her phone for a heartbeat before slamming it onto the floor in a fit of rage. No wonder she hadn't been able to reach Nicholas; he was behind bars.
The fact that it was the Dracovian authorities made her blood run cold. With Madison gone and Nicholas out of the picture, her primary avenues of attack had been severed. Was all her effort for nothing? Was she supposed to just let her plans wither away?
"No," Renee hissed, her eyes wide and bloodshot. "Never!"
A timid knock at the door interrupted her spiraling thoughts. A maid shuffled in, keeping her head low as she held out a handbag. "Ma'am, I was cleaning downstairs and found this bag of yours. I wasn't sure if you still wanted it."
Renee glanced at the bag with pure annoyance. "Just put it on the table and get out. Don't bother me with such trivialities again."
Terrified, the maid hurried to place the bag down, but in her haste, she set it too close to the edge. The bag slid off, hitting the floor and spilling its contents everywhere.
Renee opened her mouth to scream at the woman, but something among the scattered items caught her eye. Her anger vanished, replaced by a look of intense curiosity. She reached down and picked up a stack of papers.
As she scanned the documents, a manic, joyful expression spread across her face. "I knew it! I knew there was a way! It seems even the heavens are on my side, hahahaha!"
Her laughter echoed through the room, sharp and hollow. "Derrick, just you wait. I will make you regret everything you've ever done. I'll make every single one of you pay. None of you will escape!"
Lillian returned to school.
