Chapter 828 Leonard in Critical Condition
Sebastian watched her tears fall, feeling as though a blade were twisting in his own heart. He gently wiped the moisture from her cheeks. “I won’t let you speak that way. Leonard being hurt is something none of us wanted to see. But you cannot shoulder all the blame; if you do, you’ll render his sacrifice meaningless. I know Leonard’s greatest wish was for your safety- that is why he protected you without a second thought. If he knew you were thinking like this, it would break his heart.”
Lillian looked at him through a blur of tears, clutching the fabric of his shirt. “Sebastian, Master will be okay, won’t he? I promised him that once I rescued him, we’d go back to Wyvern Hill together. But now his life is hanging by a thread… is he disappointed in me?”
Sebastian pulled her head back against his chest and spoke softly. “Never. You are his proudest achievement, the student he gave his life to protect. He could never be disappointed in you. Besides, Leonard is a good man with heaven on his side; he’ll pull through. You have to stay strong so that when he recovers, you can finally take him home.”
Lillian nodded against him. “Yes… Master will be fine.”
By the time they arrived at the hospital, the “In Progress” light above the operating theater was still glowing a stark red.
Sebastian looked at Foster. “What’s the status?”
Foster’s expression was grim. “It’s hard to say. They took him straight in the moment he arrived. It’s been over two hours. The main issue is the blood loss–the situation isn’t
optimistic.”
Sebastian’s brow furrowed. He remembered Leonard’s condition at the scene; it had been dire. He could only pray for a miracle. If anything happened to the old man, the guilt would haunt Lillian for the rest of her life. The mere thought made him want to tear George apart limb from limb.
The surgery dragged on for nearly four hours before the heavy doors finally swung open. A surgeon emerged, still clad in blood–stained scrubs.
Lillian rushed forward. “Doctor, how is my master?”
Sebastian stood right behind her, his eyes fixed on the man’s face.
The surgeon slowly lowered his mask, his voice heavy with fatigue. “I am truly sorry. We did everything we could. The patient’s body was already at its absolute limit before this happened. While the bullet didn’t hit a vital organ directly, the trauma was enough to cause fatal damage. Please… prepare yourselves for the worst.”
Lillian’s legs gave way instantly. She would have collapsed if Sebastian hadn’t caught her.
“Lillian!” he cried, holding her upright.
She looked dazed, her voice a hollow whisper. “No… no, it’s not true. I don’t believe it.”
The surgeon tried to offer a sympathetic explanation. “Miss, I understand how you feel, but the shot was fired at extremely close range. The sheer force caused internal devastation. Combined with his pre–existing weakened state, his body simply couldn’t sustain the shock.”
