Lillian’s face drained of color as the horrific scene unfolded. “Master!” she shrieked, lunging forward to catch the old man’s falling body before it hit the pavement.
George snarled and leveled his weapon for a second shot, but a man blurred into motion, delivering a savage kick that sent George crashing to the ground. The handgun skittered across. the asphalt, coming to a rest several feet away. Within seconds, the remaining enforcers were pinned down by Sebastian’s reinforcements.
The journalists, arriving just behind the strike team, froze in collective shock. They had come for a scandal, but they had found the President of Mildew Corp committing an attempted execution in broad daylight.
Lillian’s fingers trembled violently as she tried to wipe the blood from Leonard’s mouth. “Master, you’re just trying to scare me, right? Why is there so much blood? Please tell me you’re scaring me… this can’t be real.”
Leonard looked up at Lillian, a weak, fleeting smile playing on his lips. “Silly girl… as long as you are safe, I can be at peace. I promised to watch you get married… but it seems I won’t be able to keep that one. Don’t be angry with me.”
Tears fell from Lillian’s eyes, splashing onto Leonard’s pale face. She shook her head frantically. “No! You can’t break your promise! You said when I graduated, I’d come back to Wyvern Hill and we’d live together. You can’t go back on your word!”
Leonard made a monumental effort to raise his hand, clutching hers. “Child… you’re grown now. You have to walk your own path. Promise me… promise me you’ll live a happy life. No matter how hard things get, stay brave. You can’t run back to Wyvern Hill to cry on my shoulder every time something goes wrong anymore.”
“I won’t listen! I don’t want to hear this!” Lillian sobbed. “You promised to stay with me. You can’t leave me alone! I said I’d rescue you and we’d go home together. How can you just abandon me?”
Leonard’s voice grew fainter, a mere rasp. “Wyvern Hill… I don’t think I’m making it back. If you go, take care of our home for me. Tell Fenton… tell him I’m sorry I won’t be there for his tea. And your plants… I already told him to mind them carefully.”
“Stop it! Just stop!” Lillian cried, her voice breaking. “I can save you. I know I can. My Frost- Needles–I can fix this!” She reached into her jade bracelet with shaking fingers to pull out her silver needles, but her hands were trembling so violently she couldn’t even hold them, let alone perform surgery.
